New Masters
05/16/2011

Rose Simpson MFA 11 CR, Crystal Ellis MFA 11 SC, Lisa Jo-Fan Chang MFA 11 FD and Camilla Fucilli MID 11 are among the 170 RISD master’s degree candidates showcasing their work in the 2011 Graduate Thesis Exhibition.
Capping two to three years
of intensive research, experimentation, critical thinking and perfecting their craftsmanship
in a particular field, more than 170 RISD master’s degree candidates are
showcasing their work in the 2011 Graduate
Thesis Exhibition. The show opens from 6–8 pm on Thursday, May 19 in a
28,000-square-foot gallery space in Hall C of the Convention Center in downtown
Providence.
The expansive,
custom-constructed galleries provide sufficient space to allow each student to
showcase a culminating body of work – multiple pieces or large installations
that represent their final thesis investigations. In most departments degree
candidates are also required to submit written theses that support and
articulate the research involved.
This year students in all
16 graduate majors are participating in the Thesis
Exhibition, meaning it will include work from Architecture, Ceramics,
Digital + Media, Furniture Design, Glass, Graphic Design, Industrial Design,
Interior Architecture, Jewelry + Metalsmithing, Landscape Architecture, Painting,
Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, Teaching + Learning in Art + Design, and
Textiles.
The show is open to the
public daily from 12–5 pm, through June 4. In addition to the Graduate Thesis Exhibition, a selection
of work by second-year graduate students will be on view for three days (June
3–5) at Sol Koffler Graduate Student Gallery at 169 Weybosset Street. An online gallery of the work in the thesis show
also opens windows into the thought process behind each student’s creation.
