Joe Gebbia and Brian Chesky are founders of AirBnB - one of the hottest startups in the sharing scene. Gebbia and Chesky were recent RISD graduates in need of extra cash to pay their rent and on a whim built a website offering attendees of a design conference a unique place to stay. The concept lead to their web platform where booking a room in a person's home anywhere in the world was as easy as booking a hotel room.

Silverman was intrigued by the convergence of Piano and Kahn, two of his favorite architects. Add to the mix Tadao Ando’s new Fort Worth Modern museum next door to the Kimbell, and you have a triumvirate of design giants.

    The Historic 200 year-old Olmsted Elm, that once stood beside the office of Frederick Law Olmsted, the father of American landscape architecture, was cut down. Trees of that significance are often called “witness trees” because of the history they’ve observed. Olmsted was “a great lover of elms,” and often used them in his designs.

    U.S. Senator Jack Reed announced a $150,000 grant from the federal Small Business Administration to RISD and Brown University. The award, called the Partnership for Sustainable Development, aims to create connections between academia, business and government. The business partner in the Brown-RISD collaboration is a start-up company planned by the two RISD-trained architects who created the innovative Box Office complex from recycled shipping containers.

    RISD hosted a collaborative workshop funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation. Participants discussed the concept of STEAM, an idea that has been gaining popularity on campus and in many other institutions in recent years.

RISD’s role is to research innovative approaches to visualizing data and communicating scientific findings through a new initiative called Making Science Visible. The goal of these new approaches is to help make science more accessible and understandable to the broader public.
