Chaired by Dean Pradeep
Sharma, the Division of Architecture + Design is RISD’s largest academic division, comprised of seven departments: Apparel Design, Architecture, Furniture Design, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Interior Architecture and Landscape Architecture.
Although architecture and design disciplines may be understood as related under the larger nomenclature of the ‘visual arts’ or under the rubric of ‘design,’ the academic majors and degree programs within this division represent seven distinct disciplines with unique histories, methods and professional practices. Work in these disciplines extends from the conceptual, cognitive and ergonomic domains to human factors and the organization of space and systems. These disciplines cover work ranging from small objects, instruments, products and digital devices to the larger human scale of furniture, built form and the design of systems and environments.
As a design and architecture collective, each discipline in the Division of Architecture and Design retains an individual, unique status as a professional degree program, recognized by boards for national accreditation, including the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD); the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC); the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB); and the Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board (LAAB).
