In this intensive studio, students
use both traditional and digital media to explore concepts that are expressed
on a two-dimensional plane and/or over a period of time. A wide variety of
assignments focus on the potential for visual elements such as line, color,
shape and texture to be used to express complex ideas. Visual space and the
space of sound may be investigated together. Memory and cultural history become
significant as students begin to appreciate the difference between expression
and communication. The differing but complementary roles of logic, intuition
and emotion are vital aspects of inquiry and problem solving. This studio is
particularly important in helping first-year students to understand the
creative process of fully realizing a successful project from concept to
completion.
