Exchanges in the US + Canada

RISD students have an opportunity to study for a semester at any of the US or Canadian art and design colleges participating in a mobility program sponsored by the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD). These exchanges allow students to experience the pedagogical approach and atmosphere at other art schools and to live in a different geographic region for a semester. RISD students may also choose to participate in the New York Studio Residency Program offered through AICAD.

The AICAD Mobility Program is primarily open to full-time students in their junior year who are in good standing and meet the eligibility requirements of their specific programs. Applications are made a semester in advance, meaning the application deadline for the fall semester is April 1 and the deadline for Spring is October 15. Once a student applies, the host school determines whether to accept or decline each application or selection of courses.

At RISD this program is administered by the Office of International Programs, which offers assistance in choosing a school that will provide the most benefit based on each individual’s needs. Current information about the colleges participating in this program (and the specific courses they offer) are available at each institutions website; URLs are included in the downloadable list posted to the upper right.
