Biography
Belén obtained her Masters in Architecture in 1991 from Columbia University GSAPP and a Bachelor of Arts cum laude from Harvard University, in Art History and Visual Arts in 1988. She is a licensed architect in Spain. For the past three summers (2010-12) Belén has been Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia University, teaching the Introduction to Architecture Program. Before that she also taught at Columbia as Adjunct Assistant Professor in the New York/Paris Program (1998-2001). This last September, she was invited to teach a graduate course on Issues in Contemporary Architecture at the Universidad del Istmo in Guatemala City and she has participated in several design workshops at different Schools of Architecture in Madrid.
She has been a practicing architect since 1993, when, together with Jeff Brock, she founded Moneo Brock Studio in New York City. The firm’s work can be characterized by the intensity of design focus it provides, whether it be architecture, interior or industrial design. In 2002 MBS opened an office in Madrid where they have recently completed the MUSEUM FUNDACION TELEFONICA. Other notable projects include a GLASS PAVILION AND PARK in Cuenca, the THERMAL BATHS in Panticosa and a GAS STATION in San Agustín de Guadalix. In parallel to her own practice she has worked as project architect with Rafael Moneo on projects such as the MUSEUMS OF MODERN ART AND ARCHITECTURE, Stockholm, Sweden, the CRANBROOK ACADEMY OF ART STUDIO BUILDING, Bloomfield Hills, or the RESIDENCE OF THE SPANISH EMBASSY, Washington DC. In 2010 MBS completed the NORTHWEST CORNER BUILDING at Columbia University, where they collaborated as design architects with Rafael Moneo.
Moneo and Brock have lectured extensively on their work from Europe to the USA to China, Turkey, Guatemala, Panama and Peru, and their work has been widely published in magazines including Tectonica, Casabella, Interior Design, Abitare, Wallpaper, Frame, Diseño Interior, On Design, AIT and in books by Taschen, Loft Publications, Rockport Press, Ryland Peters and Small and Abrams, among others. They have shown their work in exhibitions such as Una Ciudad Llamada España, (Moscow, Athens, Istambul, 2011) or Innovación Abierta, (Panama City, 2011), and have received awards for the Espacio Fundacion Telefonica, the Northwest Corner Building and the Thermal Spa.
