Biography

Paul Taylor is an artist, printmaker, publisher, educator and innovator. He has over 21 solo shows to his credit. His studio, Renaissance Press, is internationally recognized as the finest atelier of its kind for its collaborations with artists. Through Renaissance Press, Taylor has collaborated, produced and published work for artists including Sally Mann, Louise Bourgeois, Aaron Siskind, Roy DeCarava, Louise Gonzalez Palma, Kiki Smith, Dieter Roth, Christian Boltanski and Robert Mapplethorpe, among many others. Many of these prints have been acquired by important national and international collections including the RISD Museum. Renaissance Press has had over 16 national and international solo shows.

In 1989 Taylor founded the Rhode Island School of Design Press, now RISD PRINTS, a collaborative arts printmaking program designed to enrich the RISD student experience by bringing recognized and innovative artists to the Printmaking department to work on projects in conjunction with students.

In recent years, he has revolutionized the art of printmaking and helped to resolve the problem of diminishing traditional film supplies by using dedicated black-and-white computer printer inks to create beautiful digital negatives and positives from desktop printers.

He is currently writing a first-of-its-kind, technically innovative electronic multimedia book detailing the photogravure process as well as a book on hybrid printmaking based on a course he taught at RISD.

Taylor enjoys working with his students at RISD and says that he learns much more from them now than he ever did as a student. He lives in a small New Hampshire village with his wife Sevtap.
