RISD’s Newest Young Guns

10/27/2010

by Michael Freimuth 03 GD

Each year the Art Directors Club (ADC), an international organization of visual communication professionals, solicits portfolios from young designers around the world for its prestigious Young Guns competition. Five RISD alumni were named among the 50 winners in the 2010 contest: Michael Freimuth 03 GD, Elle Kim 03 GD, Joe Marianek 03 GD, Nikolay Saveliev 07 GD and Jessica Walsh 08 GD.

Encompassing several fields in visual media and design (including graphic design, illustration, product design, typography and others), Young Guns highlights the best of the world’s up-and-coming creative talent in the 30-and-under range. The winners’ work was showcased in October at the ADC Gallery in New York City and published in a limited-edition volume by Moleskine. Additionally, the winners’ portfolios are added to the permanent online collection of the Art Directors Club, and selected Young Guns are invited to speak at the ADC Gallery and the Apple Store in SoHo throughout the year.

The distinction adds to the already impressive resumes of these five professionals. Freimuth is a freelance art director, designer and illustrator based in New York, and is currently the creative director at large for Proximity magazine and the design journal Matériel. Kim works as a graphic designer in the advertising and fashion industries for clients such as Ann Taylor, Coach and Nickelodeon. Marianek, an adjunct instructor at SVA in New York, has worked at Pentagram and has been featured in numerous publications. Walsh, who is currently at Sagmeister Inc. in NYC, has also worked for Pentagram. Saveliev is focusing on design and art direction, primarily for advertising, fashion, music and fine arts, for clients including Citibank, Malcolm McLaren and Comme des Garçons.
