Parking

Student Parking
Information about parking policies for undergraduate or graduate students can be found here. Continuing Education (CE) students should download the Map for RISD|CE students (see sidebar) to locate the appropriate building and nearest parking lot to your course location. Please also consult your course registration statement for additional parking procedures.

Visitor Parking
Parking (metered or timed) is available along Benefit Street, North Main Street/South Main Street, or at various Metropark locations nearby. Parking in RISD Staff lots is prohibited.

Employee Parking
RISD provides several lots on campus for employee parking. Spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis after purchasing a RISD parking tag. More information for employees can be found here.

FAQs Regarding the Agreement with the City of Providence (July 2012)
How much more parking will RISD get as part of the agreement?
RISD has reached an agreement with the City of Providence to increase the College’s support of the City by $250,000 per year for the next 11 years, in exchange for priority rights to 69 parking spaces convenient to the RISD campus for our community’s use.

When does the new parking become available to RISD employees?
The new agreement is contingent upon the approval of both the Providence City Council and the RISD Board of Trustees (Fall 2012 meeting), and the City will then need to coordinate with our permit system and install signage. An announcement will be made once the added parking goes into effect, which likely will be early next year. Additional communication will be sent out once exact timing and details are available.

Is a permit required for these spots?
Yes, these spots require the same parking tags as existing RISD employee lots.

Are there any parking rules for the new spots?
Yes. Because these new spots are from the City and not contracted privately (as many of our existing lots are), these new spots have additional guidelines to keep in mind. We will have exclusive use of most of these spaces during certain hours, and non-exclusive use of all of them during other hours, depending on location.

What is the difference between exclusive use and non-exclusive use?
During the hours spaces are designated for RISD exclusive use, only those with RISD parking permits will be allowed to park in them. During the hours spaces are designated for RISD non-exclusive use, they will be available to anyone on a first-come, first served basis. However, non-RISD parkers will be limited to two hours and will be required to pay standard meter charges, while RISD permit holders will be allowed to stay as long as they want without meter charge. A RISD permit parker who is in one of the spaces before it becomes a non-exclusive space will be free to stay the rest of the day.

For information on which spaces are exclusive and which are non-exclusive, as well as the timing for each, please see the table below. The location of the spaces is listed below and also visible on the downloadable map. Also, the City will be posting signage showing these guidelines. Please note, spaces indicated below are pending City Council Approval.

How does this affect parking in neighborhoods?
We have worked with the City to select spaces so as to minimize neighborhood impact, but any concerns should be directed to Leo Perrotta, City of Providence, at 781.4045 ext 573 or lperrotta@providenceri.com. RISD employees should contact Public Safety with questions.
