This information pertains only to undergrads and graduate students who will be entering RISD for the first time during the summer or fall terms of 2012. 

 Important Dates and Deadlines:  

• Housing Portal Available to First Year and Graduate Students on April 9,2012 
• Housing Portal Available to Transfer Students April 16, 2012 
• Housing Application (through Housing Portal) Due on June 1, 2012 
• Housing Assignments will be emailed to first year and Transfer students by August 1, 2012 
• Housing Assignments will be email to New Graduate Students on a rolling basis through the summer 

What To Do 

 

Once RISD has received your matriculation fee, you will receive a RISD e-mail account and password from the Office of Information Technology. This process can take up to two weeks. Your email address and password is your log in for the Housing Portal. When you have received your email address/password, log into the Housing Portal to fill out the application and search for roommates.

 

 How Housing Works 

 The Office of Residence Life assigns housing through an online housing system (refered to as the Housing Portal).  

All incoming new students who want housing will need to fill out the Housing Application through the Housing Portal.  Please note that First and Second Year and Transfer students are required to live in on campus housing. 

Students are assigned to rooms based on lifestyle preferences and/or room type preferences.  There is an opportunity through the Housing Portal for students to indicate lifestyle preferences and for students to search for roommates based on those lifestyle preferences.  

For First Year Students, you can select a roommate but you cannot select a specific building.  

For Transfer and Graduate Students, you can select a roommate and/or a room type within various buildings. 

Once all incoming new student have filled out their Housing Applications, the Office of Residence Life sets the computer system to automatically create housing assignments based on the various lifestyle preferences, roommate requests, and/or room type preferences.    

For First Year Students, specific requests for single rooms will be considered.  However, a request for a single room will not guarantee that a student is assigned to that room type.  Please note that there are a limited number of single rooms and that they are assigned randomly to those students who request single rooms.  

For Transfer and Graduate Students, we will try to honor your requests for a specific room type.  However, please know that if the room type you have requested is not available, the computer will find the next closest match to your room type preference.   

Medical Accommodations 

Students with special or medical needs that impact their housing assignment should fill out a Medical Accommodation Form.  The Medical Accommodations Form is required to be filled out to request special and medical housing accommodations.  The form is located on the Residence Life website at:  http://www.risd.edu/Students/Residence_Life/Choosing_A_Room/.  All materials must be received in the Residence Life Office no later than Friday, June 1st, 2012.   All Medical Accommodations Housing Assignments are pre-assigned and based on the medical needs of the students’ condition.  Housing Assignments will be sent to students by Friday, June 15th.    

Summer Housing for Returning Students

•   April 16th- April 27th: Sign up for Summer Housing 

•   April 27th: Deadline to sign up for Summer Housing 

•   May 18th: Summer Housing Bill Due Date 

•   June 4th: Summer Housing Move In 

•   Aug. 4th: Summer Housing Closes for students without Fall 2012 Housing 

•   Aug. 25th: All students in Summer Housing Move to Fall 2012 Assignment 

Housing Available for Summer 

Summer Housing is ONLY available in 15 West Floors 6-11 and Charles Landing.  Summer Housing Assignments will be emailed to students before Friday, May 26th.  

Cost 

Summer housing costs $1890 for the entire summer.  Summer Housing Bills are due to the Student Accounts Office by Friday, May 18th. Please make checks payable to RISD and include on the Check "Summer Housing" and your RISD ID number. 

Moving 

All Residence Halls close for students who are not graduating on Saturday, May 26th.  Students who sign up and pay for summer housing will be able to remain in their spring semester housing assignment until Summer Housing opens on Monday, June 4th.  All students staying for summer must move on June 4th. 

 Summer Housing Timeline 

Student will be able to stay in Summer Housing from June 4th through August 4th unless they have an on campus housing assignment for Fall 2012.  All students with Fall 2012 housing assignments must move to their Fall Assignment on Saturday, August 25th.  

How to Sign Up for Summer Housing 

Beginning April 16^th, students can sign into the Housing Portal at starrez.risd.edu.  Select the Summer 2012 Application and fill out your Summer Housing Contract.

Returning Student Housing for 2012-2013

• If you are a going to be a sophomore, junior, senior, or returning graduate student for the 2012-13 academic and you still need on-campus housing, please contact the Office of Residence Life at 401-454-6650 to schedule an appointment.  You will need to go through this process in person to be able to sign your housing contract.
• If you are a returning from a leave of absence or are currently studying abroad, Residence Life will be coordinating housing assingments throughout April.  Please check your email regularly for updates.
• Room Change Requests will be made available to students interested in changing their Fall 2012 housing assignments from April 2nd through April 11th.  Room Changes for Fall 2012 will only be able to be filled out during this time period.  Requests outside this time period will be addressed after the start of the Fall 2012 semester.
