Faculty: Barbara T. Wong

Biography

Barbara has taught at various times since 2008 for the Department of Teaching and Learning in Art + Design. She is currently executive director of Providence CityArts for Youth, a position she has held since 2000. At CityArts, she oversees a vibrant urban community arts center located in the Southside neighborhoods of Providence, Rhode Island. CityArts provides quality arts learning in visual art and design, music, dance, theatre and creative writing to 1,200 urban at-risk youth in afterschool, summer, school vacation camps, school-based artist residencies and AmeriCorps programs.

Ms. Wong has fostered strong collaborations and innovative partnerships with the City of Providence, public and charter schools, and agencies to expand the reach of arts education within schools and during out-of-school time. Ms. Wong was appointed this year by Mayor Angel Taveras as a Providence Public School Board Member, and is a Providence After School Alliance (PASA) AfterZone Champion. She has served on review panels for the RI State Council for the Arts, Mass. Cultural Council, PPAC Arts Scholarships, RISD Pre-College Balfour Minority Scholarships and the Providence After School Alliance. She has also served on the boards of the RI Committee for the Humanities and the Brown Fox Point Early Childhood Education Center.

Ms. Wong served as a program officer at the Rhode Island Foundation from 1997-2000. She received her MA in Art + Design Education from the Rhode Island School of Design and BFA from Cornell University. Prior to her move to Rhode Island, Barbara worked in Boston, MA and Paris, France for a management consulting firm, now Oliver Wyman.
