risd connection: Bachelors of Art Education, 1975; Adjunct Faculty, Foundation Studies; at RISD since 1988
medium: allegorical paintings
special skill: Provocative yet whimsical and dense with information, Sellers crisp and meticulous paintings invite interpretation on a variety of levels and inspire students to develop their own voices.
The house image has been used symbolically in Sellers paintings for years. For her, houses reflect who we are and often emulate who we wish to be. Sellers structures are characterized in varying contexts as symbols of house/home, harbors from war and terrorism, metaphors for life choices, and personified personalities.
Sellers studio is at the Claflin School Studios in Newtonville, MA, originally an abandoned elementary school redeveloped into artist live/work space in 1987. As one of the founding members, Seller designed and hand-built her studio over a period of six years. In 1994, The New York Times published a featured article on the development of her space entitled A Drill and a Dream Make a Gym a Home.
