ABOUT RISD: Profiles

TODD MOORE

risd connection: MFA in Painting, 1984; Associate Professor, Foundation Studies

about my work: "Anybody trying to paint in these times operates from a complex of intuition and knowledge. I am not unique in being shaped by the paradoxical forces of modern ironies and romantic inclinations. I am trying to balance elements that are documentary, nostalgic and metaphoric."

what the critics say: "As in some of Edward Hopper’s paintings, the light... [in Moore’s work] seems to turn even the most ordinary scenes and objects into something special." --Bill Van Siclen, Providence [RI] Journal; [His] 'Detail from Notebook'...takes over an entire corner of the gallery, refusing to let us look at the smaller work on either side... . Moore gives this striking painting… a kind of gritty impressionism...the dense, crusty brushstrokes touch off a visual tug of war between the painting's surface and its subject." --Bill Van Siclen, Providence [RI] Journal; "Todd Moore's trômpe-l'oeil bulletin boards, unique for having carefully ordered and toned gray grids for backgrounds, show all there is to show about the techniques of illusionism in painting." --Helen Kohen, Miami [FL] Herald
