www.owpp.com
risd connection: member, Board of Trustees;
BFA in Architecture, 1965; Bachelor of
Architecture, 1966; co-founder of the RISD/Chicago alumni club; founder
of the RISD/LA club
professional practice: principal,
Belluschi/OWP & P Architects, a division of Chicagos largest
architectural firm
talent: With 35 years of professional
practice, architect Tony Belluschi is renowned for his humanistic
approach to large-scale commercial/retail and mixed-use projects both
in the US and abroad.
breaking in: The son of master architect
Pietro Belluschi, a former dean of architecture & planning at MIT,
Belluschi grew up with an extraordinary appreciation for the built
environment. With an Italian father and Finnish mother, he also
developed a keen appreciation for art and culture, and soon discovered
that his favorite role models were architects namely, his father
along with progressive Finnish architects Alvar Aalto and Eero
Saarinen. But having a famous father did not offer immediate entree
into the profession, Belluschi says. My father always gave me sound
advice, although I rarely agreed and seldom followed it," he recalls.
But once I decided on this career, I never looked back."
getting there: After earning his
architectural degree at RISD, Belluschi joined the Peace Corps as an
architectural consultant in Central America. Returning to the US in the
late 60s, he worked at firms in Portland, OR, and San Francisco before
joining Jung/Brannen Associates in Boston and then becoming principal
of Belluschi/Daskalakis Architects, also in Boston. In 1977 he joined
the Los Angeles firm Charles Kober Associates and in 1984 moved to
Chicago to head Kober/Belluschi Associates, which he acquired in 1988.
Belluschi has since remained based in Chicago, where he established
Anthony Belluschi Architects, Ltd., as a full-service architectural,
planning and urban design firm, winning numerous awards for its work in
Chicago, Denver, Miami, Melbourne, Paris and in the Middle and Far
East.
making it: In 2000 Belluschi
merged with the renowned Chicago architectural firm ODonnell Wicklund
Pigozzi and Peterson (OWP & P), which specializes in the corporate,
education, health care and life care/housing sectors. As principal of
Belluschi/OWP&P, he now oversees the firms retail/mixed use group,
serving the satisfied client base he has built up over time and lending
his well-earned reputation to the ongoing expansion of business. Long
active as a RISD trustee, Belluschi was elected vice chairman of the
board in 1995 and chairman in 2000, becoming the first alumnus of the
college and the first out-of-town chairman to lead its top
decision-making body. As an architect practicing in Chicago
and around the world, I care deeply about the essential value of RISDs
mission to educate young designers, he says. Our Board represents a marvelous,
complex design institution that faces tremendous challenges ahead, and
I look forward to continuing to help meet those chalenges.
discoveries: (1) Architecture is truly a
renaissance profession. Its really a lot like being a sculptor: you
use similar techniques to create something that is a work of art. (2)
The more I travel the more I learn from different cultures the more
I realize that theres a lot more to learn.
