NANCY SKOLOS
risd connection: Professor, Department of Graphic Design; at RISD since 1989
about her work: As half of the graphic design
partnership Skolos/Wedell, Nancy Skolos is known internationally for
work that integrates photography, type and design in often illusory
compositions. She credits early modern artists such as Malevich, Leger
and de Chirico with inspiring some of the surrealistic effects she and
photographer Tom Wedell (also a faculty member in Graphic Design)
achieve through collage techniques and multiple exposures; dubbed a
techno-cubist by one critic, Skolos agrees that she has always looked
towards the cubists for inspiration, in terms of creating dynamic
three-dimensional space.
professional practice: Skolos/Wedell pieces are
included in the graphic design collections of many of the worlds major
museums. In addition to the slew of awards they have received in
international competitions and publications, the designers are
frequently invited to discuss their work and their distinctive joint
process at American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) conferences and
colleges such as Cooper Union, the University of Washington, Cranbrook
Academy of Art and Pratt Institute. In 2003 AIGA/Boston recognized
Skoloss contributions to the field, as well as her ethical, generous
and good-natured presence in [the design] community, with its biannual
Fellows Award.
