BARBARA VON ECKARDT
risd connection: Dean of Liberal Arts and
Professor of Philosophy and Psychology; at RISD since 2002
about her work: In ongoing research and
writing projects, Barbara Von Eckardt examines psychology, linguistics
and other aspects of cognitive science through a philosophical lens.
Since completing her PhD in 1974 (with a dissertation titled Conceptions
of Sensory Experience and Mind-body Identity), she has taught philosophy
and/or psychology at the University of Washington, Yale, Wellesley,
Cornell and Colgate. Just prior to coming to RISD, she was a psychology
professor and director of the Humanities Center at the University of
Nebraska/Lincoln. Von Eckardt is a sought-after presenter at academic
conferences around the world and publishes frequently; her most recent
book Controversies and Critiques in the Philosophy of Cognitive
Science, written with Jeffrey Poland is currently under review for
publication. She has also won several honors for her photography, which
she began exhibiting in the late 1990s.
