JOHN C. CHAMBERLIN
risd connections: Associate Professor and Acting Head, Department of Art + Design Education; Assistant Director, Center for the Advancement of Art + Design Education; at RISD since 1987
about his work: In addition to teaching graduate students at RISD, John Chamberlin has co-directed and taught in Project New Directions in Art Education, a department initiative that provides public school art teachers in Rhode Island with professional development workshops and a summer academy. He helped create and oversee Project New Directions Literacy in the Arts Curriculum Development grants for three Providence elementary schools (Veazie Street, George J. West and Sackett) and is a longtime active member of the Rhode Island Art Education Association. He is also a practicing ceramist.
road to risd: Chamberlin taught elementary school in Hawaiian Gardens, CA for a decade during the 1970s and early 80s, before going on to earn a masters degree and complete course work for a doctorate in elementary and art education. While in graduate school, he was an art education consultant for the California and Arizona school systems. He came to RISD straight from the University of Arizonas graduate program.
roles at risd: Chamberlin is a valued teacher and mentor to graduate students in his department, helping future art instructors understand how to nurture an appreciation for art and design in children at the elementary and secondary school levels. He has served on many RISD committees, including the Academic Standing Committee, the Curriculum Committee, the Presidents Task Force on Service Learning, the Multicultural Sub-Committee and the Financial Aid Committee.
