Senior Critic Jan Holcomb has been
teaching at RISD since 1978. He earned his BFA in Ceramics and Painting at the
University of Michigan and his MFA in Ceramics at California State University.
He is fascinated by nature and uses the rich array of visual materials revealed
by the sciences as sources in his work. One technique he has recently been
exploring is the use of Photoshop to develop digital collages based on geologic
imagery, an intuitive process that allows him to tap into his subconscious for
inspiration. Holcomb won two NEA Fellowship Grants and has exhibited his work
at museums and galleries across the US. He lives with his wife Christina M.
Bertoni, who is a professor in RISD’s Division of Foundation Studies.
