Susan Brearey received her BA in French literature and studio art from the Evergreen State College and her MFA in painting and printmaking from RISD. Her work has been widely exhibited in the US, Europe and Asia. In 2007 at the invitation of the Meridian International Center in Washington, DC, her work was included in Out West: The Great American Landscape and exhibited at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing. The exhibition subsequently traveled to six major museums in China. Brearey recently exhibited closer to home at the Gerald Peters Gallery in Santa Fe, NM and at A.I.R. Gallery in New York City. Her work has been reviewed in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The China Daily and Art New England.
Brearey has received awards from the Grumbacher Corp., Liquitex Corp. and the Cheekwood Museum of Art in Nashville, TN. She has lectured across the country and abroad at such institutions as France’s Pont Aven School of Contemporary Art, the University of Leeds in northern England, Kunst Haus in Berlin, Keene State College in New Hampshire, the Evergreen State College in Washington, New Hampshire’s Dartmouth College and Haverford in Pennsylvania.
Brearey’s work is included in several permanent and private collections, including Bank of Boston, Cheekwood Museum of Art in Nashville, the Putney School in Vermont, the Vermont Studio Center and in the private collection of actor Sandra Bullock. She has also curated many exhibitions for the Putney School Gallery and produced musical concerts for the school in conjunction with the gallery program. Performers she brought to Putney include Peter Rowan, David Amram, Judy Collins, Rory Block, Red Heart the Ticker, Tim Eriksen and Diamond Doves. She is represented by the Gerald Peters Gallery in Santa Fe, NM and Texann Ivy Fine Arts in Orlando, FL.
