Undergraduate Sculpture studios\n

Undergraduate Sculpture students are housed in two distinct locations: the historic Metcalf Building and the newly renovated Point Street Studios. Metcalf houses the Ceramics, Jewelry + Metalsmithing, Glass and Furniture Design departments, and is situated next door to the RISD Museum and the RISD 3D Store—a retail supplier of lumber, metal, hand tools, hardware and other bulky materials.

Sophomores share a large studio on the lofty fourth floor of Metcalf while juniors and seniors maintain a locker room and have access to installation and flex spaces throughout the building, and enjoy a spacious open-plan workspace at the Point Street Studios. Undergraduates have 18-hour access to their studios and to the wood and metal studios during monitored hours.\n

The newly renovated Point Street Studios is located a short bus ride away from the Metcalf Building. In addition to the open-plan working space for juniors and seniors, Point Street houses the Kinetics, Optics and Robotics (KOR) lab, which is equipped with two 3D printers and 10 workstations.\n

Through Major Studio research groups, Sculpture majors enjoy access to RISD’s prototyping laboratory, located in the Fletcher Building Downtown. Among its many specialty tools, Co-Works is equipped with:\n

Graduate Sculpture studios \n

\n

Graduate students have 24-hour access to private and semi-private studios in the Fletcher Building, a facility designed to promote interdisciplinary discourse with grad students in other fine arts programs. The building houses critique spaces, a woodshop and extensive metal fabrication facilities in the Metcalf Building, which houses the undergraduate program. A full-time technician maintains a state-of-the-art ceramic shell foundry, where bronze and aluminum are poured weekly, and also supports wax-working, patina and rubber mold areas.\n

The MFA program supports artists engaged in rigorous interdisciplinary practices through an emphasis on visual and critical literacy. The Sculpture curriculum foregrounds studio praxis, generous group conversation, lectures and meetings with visiting artists, and studio electives to enhance each artist’s skills and methods of making. This approach fosters a tight-knit student cohort encouraged to regard each other as lifelong friends and colleagues. Visiting artists and critics, along with an active community of peers, expose students to a wide spectrum of skills, philosophies and professional experiences. Core faculty act as mentors who are committed to open engagement with each individual student and to fostering a supportive ethos among the group. The department’s visiting artist program series brings outside professionals to campus each semester for lectures, studio visits and critiques. Graduate students also benefit from frequent one-on-one meetings with core faculty and small-group discussions with other students.\n

The department’s curriculum and pedagogy encourage students to develop their work in ways that actively engage intersectional and relational thought and action through both Sculpture studio courses and extensive electives. This praxis-based community focuses on the co-creation of an environment in which all students feel supported, seen and heard, so that they benefit from the individually specific feedback from professors and peers so crucial to their development.\n

The Major Studio course forms the backbone of the student experience in Sculpture. As sophomores, students focus on basic skill acquisition, working across wood, metal, casting, performance, installation and video, while also learning about the histories of these skills. Junior year is geared toward developing a personal artistic voice and deepening skill acquisition through intensive studio electives. Students are asked to take command of conceptual and formal concerns and build skills on a project-by-project basis. By senior year, students incorporate skills, literacies and expertise into a final degree project, which culminates in a public group exhibition on campus.

Undergraduate Sculpture majors work in shared spaces in two locations: the historic Metcalf Building and the newly renovated Point Street Studios. Metcalf houses a foundry, a newly expanded woodshop and extensive metal fabrication facilities that are maintained by two full-time technicians. The state-of-the-art foundry allows for bronze and aluminum pouring and is equipped to support wax-working, patina and rubber mold-making. As sophomores, students are assigned large blue lockers that serve as a work bench and house personal tools during their three years as Sculpture majors. Each sophomore is also assigned home space in the lofty fourth floor of the Metcalf Building. Juniors and seniors maintain a locker room in Metcalf and have open plan areas with plentiful workspace at Point Street.\n
