Providence, RI, November 6, 2007 Since its inception in 2001, risd|works has featured the work of more than 400 RISD faculty and alumni, spanning every discipline. Each year, Rhode Island School of Designs retail store, gallery, and design showroom introduces a fresh new selection of unique objects. Shoppers will find a variety of wares sure to delight children and adults, along with inspired items for every room in the home.
As in years past, the 2008 collection offers tangible evidence of the many directions a RISD education can take, featuring works representing every department at RISD, including Glass, Ceramics, Furniture Design, Apparel Design, Textiles, Film/Animation/Video, Jewelry + Metalsmithing, Illustration, Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking, Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Architecture, Interior Architecture and Photography. Regardless of the medium, each artist in the collection has been selected for creating innovative objects of the highest quality and aesthetic appeal. The risd|works collection is comprised of items made by both established and up-and-coming designers and artists, working solo or as part of a larger company, creating everything from hand-crafted articles to mass-produced designs.
Highlights of the new collection include the Mod Rocker childrens chair by Lisa Albin (Architecture 90); Pop-Out Jewelry, including earrings and a pendant embedded in a single piece of steel, by Melissa Borrell (Jewelry + Metalsmithing MFA 05); Partridge in a Pear Tree oil painting by Chris Buzelli (Illustration 95); a two-toned fan plate and sauce bowl by Paul Eshelman (Ceramics MFA 81); Reveal lighting, which projects the silhouette of a window frame with the whisper of a tree beyond by Adam Frank (Sculpture 92); the Tree Hooked Coat Rack by Alissia Melka-Teichroew (Master of Industrial Design 04); and Flotsam, the childrens book that earned David Wiesner (Illustration 78) a 2007 Caldecott Medal.
Old favorites are still available, of course from the childrens book Bens Dream by Chris Van Allsburg (MFA in Sculpture 75) to the Cuisinart kitchen scale by the late Industrial Design Professor Marc Harrison.
This holiday season, from November 2007 through January 2008, risd|works will also feature a small works show. Featured alumni artwork will be hung salon-style in the store, with all items priced under $400.
risd|works is located in the heart of downtown Providence in the historic retail district at 10 Westminster Street on the first floor of the Merchants Bank building, opposite the College Street bridge. Hours are Monday-Saturday, 10am-6pm and Sunday, 11am-5pm, with extended evening hours for special events such as Gallery Night Providence (third Thursday of every month until 9pm) and WaterFire.
If you cant come in to enjoy the ever-changing array of art and design objects in person, items from the annual collection are also available online at www.risdworks.com, which includes a searchable database, artists profiles, pricing, and online purchasing options.
