 | 11.20.09 | issue #56 | | | students go entrepreneurial | | | RISD students have opened RISD Exposé, a "pop-up" gift shop/gallery featuring their own original works of art - perfect for holiday giving. Working with the Office of Student Life, the organizers found a suitable location in Downcity (Providence's growing arts district), invited all undergrad and grad students to submit work, and designed the displays and presentation. They're offering paintings, photography, jewelry, ceramics, clothing, furniture, glass, prints and sculpture at the temporary shop, which will be open daily (except for Mondays) from 11am to 6pm through December 12. Located at 232 Westminster Street, the inviting venue is full of extraordinary handmade gifts you can't find anywhere else. And if you can make it, the grand opening is tonight, starting at 7pm. | | | risdstore.com | check out our new site! | | |
The new risdstore.com made its debut last week, featuring RISD gear, books by RISD authors, student designs and more! The site also provides an improved system for adding cash to student accounts.

| | | from alumni relations | | | On Saturday, December 5, RISD is hosting a tribute to the life and work of the late, great Richard Merkin MFA '63 PT, who taught here from 1963-2005. Alumni, colleagues and other friends will get together to share their memories; you can find some of those testimonials and more information about the day's schedule here. RISD is also establishing a scholarship fund in Merkin's memory to help students in need; you can give to the scholarship online by marking the 'restricted gift' option and noting 'Merkin Scholarship Fund' in the blank box. Contact Louise Olson with any questions.
New York-based sculptor/performance artist Janine Antoni MFA '89 SC will visit RISD on Tuesday, December 8 and give a public lecture at 6:30pm in the RISD Auditorium. The Alumni Relations Office is co-sponsoring the event with the Fine Arts Division and the Glass Department's Page Hazlegrove Fund. It's free, but you need to contact Laurie Chronley to reserve a ticket in advance.
On November 5 Keith Campbell BArch '78 hosted a RISD/Chicago gathering with President John Maeda at RTKL Associates, the international architecture, engineering and planning firm where he's a vice president. John spoke to alumni and parents about RISD's strategic planning process and what he has learned from alumni as he travels around the country. Check the our.risd blog for a few photos from the event.
| | | on campus | | | The Balls are playing their second game of the season this evening - against Mass Art. Come cheer them on so they can build on their 1-0 winning "streak." The home game starts at 7:30pm at the Wheeler School gym, corner of Angell and Hope streets (use the entrance on Hope). It's open to everyone and the more the merrier!
Give yourself a holiday treat and a nice entrée to the weekend with the RISD Museum's Music Friday event on December 11. Infusion Experience will play Latin salsa in the Main Gallery from 5:30-8:30pm ($5 for members, $8 general; restricted to adults 21 and over).
You can expect the fall issue of risd views to arrive in your mailbox the first week of December, but if you just can't wait, you can download a pdf of it here. | |
