 | 01.15.09 | issue #47 | | | risd + the inauguration |  | | With the Presidential Inauguration just days away, many members of the RISD community are involved in the national celebration. The popular Obama poster designed by Shepard Fairey '92 IL, already seen all over the world, will also be in the MANIFEST HOPE: DC exhibition and at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery. Among the other RISD people with work in MANIFEST HOPE: DC is Derek Gores '93 IL, who won two of the 15 special recognition awards the jury selected from roughly 1,000 submissions. Some of the best posters rounded up through the Design for Obama site created by Aaron Perry-Zucker '09 GD and Adam Meyer '09 ID are being shown in NYC and DC. And the new lunar rover under development by NASA designers Evan Twyford '05 ID and Carl Conlee '05 ID will be seen in the Inaugural parade. | | | from alumni relations |  | | | Thanks to Mike DiTullo '98 ID, a design director at Converse, RISD's infamous basketball players The Balls are video-taping themselves in action and hitting the courts this winter wearing new game sneakers and uniforms. They'll debut the Converse duds at the first game of the season on Friday, January 16 at 7:30pm, when they battle it out with arch-rivals from Pratt at the Wheeler Gym in Providence.
Even the threat of snow couldn't keep the crowds away from last weekend's opening reception for the RISD New England Alumni Biennial 2009 at Arsenal Center for the Arts in Watertown, MA. More than 550 people attended and enjoyed the work of 55 alumni. Catch it if you can by February 22.
| | | on campus |  | | | In the fall studio Out of Gas!, taught by Khipra Nichols BID '78, Michael Lye '96 ID and Brown Engineering faculty Chris Bull, RISD and Brown students worked together to come up with a prototype for a small urban vehicle powered by renewable energy sources.
In conjunction with the Bedazzled exhibition about camouflage at the Fleet Library at RISD, the show's curator, Readers Services Librarian Claudia Covert, has organized a symposium on Artists at War: Exploring the Connections Between Art and Camouflage. The free discussion runs from 2-4pm on Saturday, February 14 in the Chace Center's Metcalf Auditorium. The list of speakers is on the Bedazzled blog.
Video artist Carlos Motta, who is featured in the Alternating Beats exhibition at The RISD Museum, will speak about political involvement through art and how he engages the public as participants in his artwork. His presentation takes place at 6:30pm on Tuesday, February 17 at the Chace Center's Metcalf Auditorium.
