Forty RISD freshmen capped their fall studio in three-dimensional design with a sled design project under the direction of Foundation Studies Critic Deborah Coolidge MFA 80 CR. Building on a series of assignments that help students to understand form, Coolidge chose this four-week finale because it challenges students to build fully functional 3D objects that factor in complex structural variables (stability, tracking, safety, weight, steering, braking, etc.) with aesthetic concerns. Her students in two Foundation sections worked individually and in teams of two to construct 29 full-scale sleds in materials of their choice wood, metal, rope, plastic, found objects. Despite this winters balmy temperatures in the northeast, the final crit proved to be a blast after all the hard work as students and their teacher test drove their creations at a local ski area.

• Even if your New Years resolutions called for cutting the sweet stuff, you might want to have some fun with crazyaboutcupcakes.com, the latest entrepreneurial venture by the ever resourceful Krystina Castella 89 ID. Why cupcakes? Theyre friendly, stylish, nostalgic and portable, she says.
• Schaechter blurs the distinctions between painting and glass using skillfully rendered compositions and novel technical approaches, notes curator Alex Baker in the foreword to the eye-catching new book Extra Virgin: The Stained Glass of Judith Schaechter. Early influences such as doodling, comic books and punk rock definitely show in the unconventional vignettes of this 1983 graduate of the glass program.
