fresh from foundation
01.20.06 | issue #14
For Foundation Studies students, first semester is full of surprises, inspiration and lots of work. One week they’re deconstructing a brush and redesigning the ideal handle while keeping on top of a color theory project, staying awake through art history lectures and writing an English paper. The next week a 3D professor charges them with sculpting an oversized egg “from the internal core of energy out toward the surface.” Or they’re immersed in the history of ornamental columns in preparation for painting their own intricate 2D versions. And with every assignment, the “craftsmanship must be impeccable,” insist Foundation faculty. It’s little wonder that by Wintersession, students are pleased to see the fruits of their intense studio labors exhibited in their first Woods-Gerry Gallery show. Not everyone’s work makes it into the exhibition (after all, there are 405 freshmen vying for space), but when the show opens in early January students share a collective feeling of accomplishment.

from the alumni association
Just as the holidays ended, the prime season for searching for college and K-12 teaching positions began. Check out the postings at RISD’s own ArtWorks or look for college faculty openings via The Chronicle of Higher Education and the College Art Association’s Online Career Center. An array of resources can also be found in the Art Education & College Teaching folder in RISD’s Online Career Library.

Robert Storr is curating, ExitArt is hosting, but to be considered for the RISD Biennial NYC 2006 you need to apply by February 1. This is for alumni living or working in the NYC area only; if you fit that description, hop to it and download a pdf of the entry form.

Exercise your right and your opinion. Be sure to vote for the candidate of your choice in the 2006 Alumni Trustee Election. You need to cast your vote by February 28 using the paper ballot that should have arrived recently in your home mailbox, but you can read more about each candidate online.

Architecture Professor Emeritus Friedrich St. Florian will talk about some of his most satisfying projects — from the Oslo Opera House to the WWII Memorial in Washington, DC — on Thursday evening, January 26 at Design Within Reach in Providence. His drawings will also be exhibited at the design store through January 31.

A trio of elegant “Sunspars” designed by Roberto Rovira MLA ’98, a new transplant to Miami, took first place in an international competition for the Miami Monument. His 2,000-foot solar-powered towers function as dramatic vertical lookouts with streaming media bars running up the spine and also transform into horizontal pedestrian bridges that just might come in handy for evacuating people prior to a hurricane. Even though this was “an ideas competition,” Rovira says, he is actively seeking grants to further develop the Sunspar concept.

The “inherent perfectionism [of modern design] has dovetailed beautifully with our commodity-based economy,” says Natalia Ilyin MFA ’91 GD, because it keeps people “itching” to buy ever better products. This odd “collusion” is the focus of her new book Chasing the Perfect: Thoughts on Modernist Design in Our Time. Ilyin, who is among the featured speakers at this spring’s Success by Design conference, tapped former classmate and RISD Associate Professor Matthew Monk MFA ’91 GD to design the book.

Pixar: 20 Years of Animation, a show that has been drawing a lot of attention at MoMA, features a complete film retrospective along with the mélange of paintings, concept art and sculpture that has made the studio’s computer-generated films so refreshing. RISD alumni Adam Bronstein ’97 FAV, Scott Clark ’96 IL, Jeremy Lasky ’97 FAV and Angus MacLane ’97 FAV have all contributed their talents at Pixar to produce such inspired animation as Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Finding Nemo and The Incredibles.

the works

Last fall risd|works welcomed a new manager, Matthew Johnson, to the popular hybrid of retail store, gallery and design showroom located at 10 Westminster Street in Providence. In addition to the recently launched 2006 annual collection, new alumni and faculty work continues to be introduced throughout the year. If you’ve never chanced upon RISD’s centralized online gallery of student, faculty and alumni work, you might want to check it out. With almost 1,700 images, it’s updated often and worth revisiting.

As a complement to risd views, the college magazine, e-views is produced by RISD’s Design Marketing Collaborative and e-mailed to readers monthly during the academic year (September-June). Questions? Comments? Send a message to risdviews@risd.edu.
