It’s break time at RISD this week, with students transitioning between Wintersession and spring semester. For most, the last six weeks were intense but refreshing. Some students pursued internships off campus — at places like Cosmo Girl magazine and Liz Claiborne in NYC, Motion Graphics in LA and Himatsingka silk company in Bangalore, India. Others studied abroad or stayed right in snowy Providence to delve into special projects. Among the more eclectic offerings were courses called A Little Bit Dangerous (on the art of music videos), Knight to Cyborg (a genealogy of warriors through the ages), Making & Playing (a class on improvisational musical instruments) and Math and Physics Review (a perennial favorite taught by Professor Wil Yoder ’62 AR). Wintersession also drew a number of visiting faculty, including NYC-based painter Nicholas Evans-Cato ’94 PT, Korean textiles and apparel designer Chunghie Lee, African literature scholar Gitahi Gititi and furniture designer Eck Follen MFA ’90 FD.

look around
Cinematographer Robert Richardson ’79 FAV will find out on Sunday, February 27 if he’ll take home an Oscar for The Aviator, the critically acclaimed Martin Scorsese movie nominated for 11 Academy Awards. If he collects a trophy, it won’t be his first; Richardson has been nominated for four other films and won in 1991 for his work on JFK.

If you’re an iPod fanatic or fanatic-wanna-be, check out iPod and iTunes Hacks by Hadley Stern ’97 GD. “If you like to tinker, pull things apart or generally prefer to live outside the mainstream, you’ll love this book,” promises a fan on Amazon. Among his many multiple personalities, Stern is also editor in chief of AppleMatters, “a serious yet irreverent look at all things Apple.”

Video installation artist Janet Biggs ’85 GL and photographer Liz Deschenes ’88 PH, both based in New York, are among the 10 artists nationwide to win the most recent round of Anonymous Was A Woman awards. The $25,000 no-strings-attached grants are aimed at helping women over 35 pursue their creative work.

new dean

Jessie Shefrin, who held a variety of positions at Alfred University’s School of Art and Design over the past 28 years, began last month as RISD’s new dean of Graduate Studies.

cinema fantastique

Notre Musique, the latest film by Jean-Luc Godard, Kings and Queen by Arnaud Desplechin and A Wonderful Spell by Dominique Cabrera are among the top draws at the Providence French Film Festival, presented by Brown University with help from all sorts of sponsors and contributors, including RISD’s FAV Department. It’s sure to be captivating, and Cabrera will be on hand on March 6 to talk about her film — at the Cable Car from February 24 through March 6.

think summer

Each year more than 400 Pre-College students from around the country and the world learn first-hand how transformative six weeks at RISD can be. If someone you know is interested, there’s a Pre-College Preview session at RISD on March 12. It’s also not too early to consider the wide range of other Summer Studies programs at RISD, including college credit-granting courses and opportunities to study abroad.

entrepreneurship center tour

The Center for Design & Business, a joint venture between RISD and Bryant University, is hosting on-site tours of its Design & Business Entrepreneurship Center in downtown Providence on Wednesday, February 23 from 8-9:30am. Click here to register or get more information.
