Working in cross-disciplinary teams of two, students in RISDs Apparel Design and Textiles departments recently collaborated with the Italian Trade Commission (ITC) and 23 Italian fabric and yarn mills to design and create garments using these high-quality materials. This was a great opportunity for RISD to both foster relationships with important industry partners and encourage a collaborative design process among students, notes Assistant Professor Liz Collins 91 TX/MFA 99, the faculty leader on the Textiles side of the equation. The resulting pieces represent a cross-pollination of work and techniques, adds Apparel Design Department Head Donna Gustavsen. Work from the studio will be featured in a runway show at The RISD Museum on March 4 and on display at Bergdorf Goodman in New York the week of March 11. |

RISD Trustee Maggie Williams, who worked in the Clinton White House for five years, has been appointed Hillary Clintons new presidential campaign manager.
Maybe you noticed her stylized handbag on the cover of The New York Times January 10 Style supplement? Or her serene snowy city cover for The New Yorker at the end of December? Between freelance commissions, Providence-based illustrator Kim DeMarco 88 IL also manages to keep up a fun visual blog that included the news of John Maedas appointment as RISDs next president, among other eclectic observations.
Paul Rand had a very simple, direct style and [was] among the most important designers to ever live, noted Michael Kroeger MFA 87 GD in a recent article on his new book Paul Rand: Conversations with Students. A designer and professor now based in Cincinnati, Kroeger conducted a series of interviews for the book when he got to know Rand as a professor in Arizona.
