silk road runs through risd
03.16.05 | issue #6
For several days in April the RISD campus will become a cultural hub — a junction of societies, historical periods and artistic genres — through an international group of musicians known as The Silk Road Ensemble. Led by renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma, the group is one component of the Silk Road Project, an artistic and educational organization he founded in 1998 to “study the ebb and flow of ideas” along the ancient trade route connecting Europe and Asia. Twenty musicians will participate in the RISD residency from April 1-5, offering students, faculty and other members of the community a mix of performances and interactive workshops. This fusion of art and music echoes Ma’s philosophy — and RISD’s: “I believe that when we enlarge our view of the world we also deepen our understanding of our own lives and culture.”

look around
Nickelodeon’s spring programming lineup includes the standout Avatar: The Last Airbender, a new animated series written and produced by Bryan Konietzko ’98 IL and Michael DiMartino ’96 FAV (whose directing credits include episodes of Family Guy and King of the Hill). Avatar is a departure into fantasy/adventure, complex storylines and a look that critics have called “lavish.”

Jill Rossi MFA ’06 FD was one of 19 art students selected from a pool of nearly 1000 to receive a NICHE student award at the Philadelphia Buyers Market of American Craft in February. Her winning piece — a walnut bench titled Division — is featured in the spring issue of NICHE magazine and is currently on view at the Providence Art Club, along with work by several other students, alumni and faculty.

Visitors to the newly opened Clinton Library in Little Rock, AR get a taste of the presidential experience with a full-scale replica of the Oval Office, complete with a reproduction of the 1790 Thomas Seymour clock by Robert Materne MFA ’84 ID. The painstaking, months-long process of building the clock was “like having a new baby,” the artist says.

consent to gravity

On March 19 and 20 The RISD Museum joins with the contemporary ballet company Island Moving Co. to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Frederick Sommer. In conjunction with Consent to Gravity, a Museum exhibition of his inventive photography from the 1940s-60s, the dance troupe interprets Sommer’s unusual musical scores in two performances at the RISD Auditorium.

9/11 lecture

Michael Adas, professor of global history at Rutgers University, speaks on the topic Paradox in Steel: 9/11 and the Twin Towers on March 24 in the RISD Auditorium. This lecture is sponsored by the Department of History, Philosophy + Social Sciences (HPSS) and the Division of Liberal Arts.

planning for success

If you’re in the business of design, how do you go about differentiating yourself from the field of competitors? On April 1 design marketing specialist Linda Fisher presents a day-long seminar on developing a customized Living Marketing Plan at the Center for Design & Business, a joint venture between RISD and Bryant University.

learning from bhopal

Bhopal, India was struck by tragedy in 1984 when gas escaping from a pesticide factory killed thousands of people in a single night. On April 9 at the RISD Auditorium, an international panel of scientists, environmental experts and architects (including RISD faculty) will use the disaster as a platform to discuss “ethical, environmental, and creative issues of profound urgency at the international and local levels.”
