innovative risd/high school studio
03.19.07 | issue #26
Through a collaborative effort between a RISD alumna, a department head and a graduate student, a dozen high school students from The Met in Providence are working with RISD Industrial Design students this spring to design a 2009 concept car for Nissan. Spearheaded by Nell Daniel ’92 PH, a RISD trustee who is also executive director of Sweat Equity Enterprises (SEE) in NYC, the project is designed to give underserved urban youth access to a learning experience that can help them to discover their creative voices and career potential. SEE got Nissan to sponsor the studio as a competition between selected students in Providence and New York City, and arranged for RISD to host and run the studio thanks to support from RISD ID Department Head Leslie Fontana. Chelsea Green MID ’07 (listen to audio slide show), project manager for the twice weekly studio, has recruited a half a dozen undergraduates to help the high school students to get up to speed with basic concepts in 3D and automotive design. “They’re designing for people like themselves — first-time buyers in the youth market,” Green says. But in the process, these high school students are learning the value of teamwork, the importance of clear communication and just why they might want to pursue a career in design.

from the alumni association
Learn more about the creative paths of four RISD artists at OBJECTively Speaking: Roots and Routes, a panel discussion held in conjunction with the RISD Routes exhibition now at the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, MA. The discussion begins at 2pm on Sunday, April 1 at the Fuller and is free for students and $8 for alumni and others.

Call for entries: currently enrolled students and alumni who graduated in 2004, 2005 or 2006 are invited to submit images for consideration for a month-long show featuring the work of four chosen artists at CÆLUM GALLERY in Chelsea (NYC), co-founded and co-directed by RISD graduate Nicholas Bergman ’72 PT. The deadline for submissions is May 15.

It’s indeed easy to use Indeed to search for work. Simply enter a creative job title and city, state or zip and this search engine identifies opportunities through all the major online job boards along with newspapers, associations and company career pages. Especially effective for design-related jobs, Indeed allows for targeted geographic searches throughout the US.

look around
Author/illustrator Brian Selznick ’88 IL is thrilled that his extraordinary children’s novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret (2007, Scholastic) has been warmly received by critics and young readers alike. In fact, last month Warner Bros. and Initial Entertainment Group bought the movie rights to the 526-page tome told in words and pictures, with the possibility that Martin Scorsese will direct.

This week Denver artist Patrick Marold ’97 ID will install 3,000 wind-powered lights on a hillside in Vail, CO, as part of a month-long environmental installation chosen by the town to usher in Earth Day. The kinetic quality of The Windmill Project and its focus on revealing “the shape of the wind” through wave-like patterns of light are expected to appeal to those who have a chance to see it at night.

With a selection of “elegant and wonderfully modern” vases on view through July in the National Design Triennial, David Wiseman ’03 FD was also asked to produce a piece for the Cooper-Hewitt’s Limited Editions in Design. His bronze and porcelain Pomegranate Branch is now being featured at The Shop at Cooper-Hewitt.
