risd/gap experiment

eviews featureLast month two dozen RISD students from half a dozen different majors sliced, diced, embellished and reconstructed Gap's new line of spring cardigans, responding to an opportunity from the company to totally reimagine and redefine its classic sweaters. The students' one-of-a-kind cardigans sold out the first day they were shown at Gap's White Space venue (next to its flagship store in Manhattan) and attracted plenty of media attention - on fashion blogs, Rhode Island TV station WPRI and in Women's Wear Daily. As Gap's creative director Patrick Robinson told WWD, in today's troubled economy "this is what we should all be doing - promoting out-of-the-box thinking and talking about emerging designers."

At the end of the month, President John Maeda begins a spring series of informal receptions/conversations with alumni, starting on the West Coast. He'll be at Heath Ceramics in Los Angeles on March 30 and at 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco on March 31, hoping to get to know as many alumni as possible. He'll also host gatherings at the Knoll Showroom in Boston on April 15 and at Martha Stewart Living in New York on May 14. The $15 registration fee for each of these early evening get-togethers helps defray the costs. Click here to RSVP online.

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, April 21 and Tuesday, April 28 when two unique voices in the film/entertainment industry visit RISD as part of the Alumni Lecture Series sponsored by Alumni Relations. Scott Mednick '78 GD, chairman of MysticVision Entertainment and executive producer for Where the Wild Things Are, 10,000 BC and 300, among many other movies, will speak about his compelling projects at 6:30 pm on April 21 in the Chace Center's Metcalf Auditorium. A week later, director Gus Van Sant '75 FAV will share stories about making his most recent film Milk, along with such earlier successes as Elephant and Good Will Hunting, at 7pm on April 28 in the RISD Auditorium.

Last week representatives from 95 leading design firms came to campus (watch the video here) at the invitation of RISD's Career Services Office - to conduct informal interviews and give feedback on student portfolios. More than 400 students in seven majors took advantage of these opportunities, and roughly 50 alumni also took part, lending their experiences and expertise to the job- hunting process. Next up: Illustration + Animation portfolio reviews on April 8 and Fine Arts on April 13.

Photographer and filmmaker Natalia Almada MFA '01 PH, who won the Documentary Directing Award at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival for El General, will show and speak about her work on Monday, March 31 at 7 pm, as part of the Photography Department's T.C. Colley Lecture Series. She'll present in the Metcalf Auditorium, which is to the left of risd|works when you enter the Chace Center.

New York-based event designer David Stark '91 PT, known for producing extraordinary and inventive corporate and private events, headlines The RISD Museum Associates' fundraising luncheon on Monday, April 6 at the museum. For tickets (starting at $125 each), call or e-mail Pam Kimel at 401 454-6505.

Even if you can't make it to campus for the student-organized brain-stimulus on Saturday, April 11, be sure to check out the 100 short presentations by various members of the RISD community that will be posted on the What We Do site in the weeks that follow. FAV students in a class taught by Assistant Professor Daniel Peltz will film the show-and-tell sessions, which take place simultaneously at eight different RISD locations.
