Students are back after Wintersession, a popular time to venture off campus for travel-study programs and professional internships. To get a feel for different work environments and prepare for positions in various fields, students intern at magazines and film production companies, architectural firms and as studio assistants to fine artists. Whether theyre in a major city like New York or LA, or at an artisans coop in Guatemala, internships provide a sense of the possibilities out there and can even offer a foot in the door to a full-time position. For RISD students, who are notorious for going after the most challenging, personally satisfying work imaginable, internships offer the perfect complement to the creative growth they experience in the studio.
from the alumni association
• In search of talent? Innovative portfolios and creative minds are yours for the asking. So why not help employ emerging artists and designers by posting a job or internship at ArtWorks?
• If you have recently written or illustrated a published book, please e-mail Steve Whitten in the Alumni + Career Services Office. Were also looking for interesting bookstores and libraries near you where we can hold alumni events next year. With the grand opening of the new Fleet Library at RISD in October 2006, this is a great opportunity to celebrate RISDs literary tradition.
• The Alumni Association is pleased to announce that alumni who voted in the most recent election have selected Mitchell Rigie 78 IL as the newest alumni representative to RISDs Board of Trustees. Know anyone else with trustee potential? Please use this form to submit nominations for the 2007 Alumni Trustee Election before August 1, 2006.
look around
• Anime made in America? Last month NickToons launched its first homegrown anime series, Kappa Mikey, and as the lead 3D artist on the project Chris Leathers 94 PT of the Animation Collective deserves credit for helping develop the technologically groundbreaking show. Variety predicts that the cartoon shouldnt take long to become a cult hit.
• Now that spring has sprung, its time to get the Real Dirt from Ken Druse 72 FAV/MFA 74, an accomplished photographer/gardening superstar who now has a fun weekly radio program and a gardening e-newsletter.
• My goal was to put the idea out there and step back, noted Michael Esordi 91 GD, who made the news recently for posting a soul for sale on eBay. He was reportedly hoping to get people to think and maybe to believe in something.
• Rhino has re-released all eight of the Talking Heads studio albums from the late 1970s and early 80s, remastered and with bonus tracks and videos. If this pre-dates you, the first members of the influential band Chris Frantz 74 PT, Tina Weymouth 74 PT and David Byrne met at RISD.

solar solutions
Students who helped design and build RISDs entry into the 2005 Solar Decathlon appeared on an episode (#2521) of This Old House in February, which is being rebroadcast on WGBH 2 (Boston) on Saturday, March 25 at 5pm. The solar team already made its national TV debut in January when the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Network featured a segment on the RISD solar project, which is taking on a life of its own beyond the competition.
more les blank
Filmmaker Les Blank, who has made more than 40 eye-opening documentaries about the lives of people living on the fringes of American society, will show and discuss three of his best films at the RISD Auditorium on Monday, April 3.

This is the nicest place Im ever going to live, effused Kate Copeland MFA 06 PR while showing a Providence Journal reporter her 11th-floor loft space in the new student housing facility, 15 West. For more on the new dorm, click here.
