new library almost ready
04.14.06 | issue #17
The Fleet Library at RISD is shaping up to be as welcoming and user-friendly as everyone had hoped (see video). With 55,000 sf on two floors, the new facility will offer four times as much space as the current one on Benefit Street. Although construction is almost complete and the library is scheduled to open on June 26, fundraising to cover the $11.2 million renovation costs continues in earnest. Naming opportunities are still available for specific rooms, or if you’re on a more modest budget, consider donating $125 this year and next to have your name noted on a special bookplate for a volume in the collection.

from the alumni association
If you like finding RISD-related shows through the ‘now showing’ column (to the right) and the exhibitions page, you might also want to do some virtual gallery-hopping at Galleryguide.com. It’s a great way to discover potential exhibition opportunities.

Don’t miss the RISD Alumni Spring Art Sale on Benefit Street (May 6, rain or shine).

look around
If you’re paying for more than basic cable, chances are you get HGTV and the DIY Network, where Amy Devers MFA ’01 FD hosts two weekly shows: DIY to the Rescue and her own brainchild about designing and building furniture, called Freeform Furniture. Two members of the creative team behind the latter are also risdoids: Emilie Douglas ’01 FD and Tanya Aguiniga MFA ’05 FD.

Ann Fessler, a professor of Photography at RISD, will kick off an 11-city book tour with two local readings of her remarkable new book The Girls Who Went Away (The Penguin Press) — about the hidden histories of women who gave up their babies for adoption in the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s. She’ll read at Borders in Providence Place Mall on Tuesday, May 9 at 7pm and at Harvard Book Store in Cambridge on Wednesday, May 10 at 6:30pm. Also, check local listings for an interview with Fessler on the NPR program Fresh Air. For more on the research behind the book, click here.

Things are looking especially good for filmmaker Jake Mahaffy ’96 FAV, who has won a Guggenheim Fellowship to support production of Free In Deed, a new full-length feature. To top it off, he’ll also be headed to the Sundance Directors/Screenwriters Lab in June thanks to a second fortuitous break, winning the Sundance Institute’s first fellowship for screenwriting.

rare opportunity to see latino films

From April 22-29 the RISD Auditorium will draw crowds of contemporary cinema fans to the 14th annual Latin American Film Festival, which features an amazing array of new films from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Cuba, Mexico and elsewhere — all subtitled in English for those who need it.

mehretu to visit twice

Julie Mehretu MFA ’97 PT/PR will speak about her work on Monday, April 24 at 4:30pm in the RISD Auditorium. Having won a 2005 MacArthur “genius” award, the New York-based painter is continuing to experiment with large-scale abstract work, and will return to campus again for Commencement weekend, where she is being honored with the Alumni Association’s Artistic Achievement Award.

mosque for peace

Author/illustrator (and national chair of RISD’s Future by Desing campaign) David Macaulay ’69 AR headlines a May 13 benefit for Spaces for Peace at the RISD Auditorium. He’ll discuss his book Mosque with Islamic architecture scholar Nasser Rabbat in a conversation moderated by radio talk show host Christopher Lydon.

foundation revisited

Alumni are invited to relive the freshman foundation experience — at least for a day — with a 3D design studio taught by current Foundation Studies Associate Professor Ken Horii. For more on the May 6 workshop, click here.
