eviews featureMay is the best time to get a sense of what's going on at RISD. Students not only present their work at crits, but to the broader public through a bevy of fun and interesting events. Seniors are screening freshly-cut final films in the RISD Auditorium through Saturday, starting at 7 each evening. Tonight there's an opening reception for the ever-intriguing Graduate Thesis Exhibition from 6-8 pm at the Rhode Island Convention Center, and this Saturday the best work by Apparel Design majors hits the runway at Collection '09, with a preview performance at 2 pm and the more polished show at 7 pm at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence. If you're closer to New York than Providence this weekend, be sure to check out the many alumni showing at this year's International Contemporary Furniture Fair at the Jacob Javits Convention Center. Students from Furniture Design will be there, too, showing their work in Immaterialize (booth 1273).

President Maeda is wrapping up his START HERE spring tour by getting together with New York-area alumni and friends tonight from 6:30-8 pm at Martha Stewart Living in Manhattan. You can still RSVP online for the final event in Providence, which takes place from 6:30-8 pm on June 11 at American Locomotive Works.

At the Annual Meeting on May 2 and 3, the Alumni Council unanimously chose Nat Hesse '76 SC as president of the Alumni Association. Nat has kept the RISD New Mexico club active for many years and for the last year has also served as 2nd vice president of the Association. He succeeds Joan Herron '64 GD, a San Francisco-based designer who has done a wonderful job of leading the organization during her two-year tenure as president, and like her, will help represent alumni with an ex-oficio seat on the Board of Trustees.

Two graduating students and three alumni have won 2009-10 Fulbright grants to explore glass, dance, animation, textile design and social history in various European countries. In the past 15 years, 49 RISD students and alumni have studied all over the world via the Fulbright program, thanks in part to coaching from RISD's Career Services Office, where you, too, can get assistance with the application process.

Be sure to make your Annual Fund gift to RISD before June 30, so that it counts toward this year's totals. President Maeda has made scholarships a top priority for the Annual Fund, so this is your opportunity to give back and help the next generation of creative talent. Make your gift online or call 401 454-6420.

Project Open Door, RISD's free after-school portfolio development program for teens, is wrapping up a successful year with a two-day exhibition of work by students in the program, who are celebrating their acceptance at RISD and other leading art schools. Catch the show at the CIT, 169 Weybosset Street, on Wednesday and Thursday, May 27 and 28, or better yet: join students at the closing reception from 5-8 pm on the 28th.

It's not too late to register for Summer Studies courses at RISD, along other art and design programs for kids, teens and adults. RISD's summer session runs from June 14-July 25, with a number of shorter courses available in that window.
