from alumni relations

At Commencement on May 31, the Alumni Association will present children’s book editor Walter Lorraine ’52 AD with its Award for Professional Achievement. His longtime employer Houghton Mifflin recently established the Walter H. Lorraine Children’s Book Fund at the Fleet Library at RISD, which allows the best new picture books to be added to the collection.

Alumni Council and Association members from across the country are converging on campus next month for the Association’s Annual Meeting. After celebrating with RISD’s newest alumni at Commencement, Association members will get together on Saturday, May 31 and Sunday, June 1. All alumni are invited to participate; contact Director of Alumni Relations Christina Hartley ’74 IL for specifics.

Accomplished artists Glenn Ligon and Lisa Sigal will co-curate the RISD New York Alumni Biennial 2008, which will run from September 7-30 at The Old American Can Factory in Brooklyn. Deadline for submissions: Friday, June 27.

look around

When Denver hosts the Democratic National Convention in August, a delegation from RISD will be there contributing to the experience with Partly Sunny: Designs to Change the Forecast. In keeping with the green theme of this year’s DNC, the RISD design showcase and projects are focused on demonstrating “what we can do now to address the challenges posed by climate change,” explains Charlie Cannon, the faculty member coordinating RISD’s participation. The project is one component of Dialog:City, a citywide arts program sponsored by the Denver 2008 Host Committee and curated by Seth Goldenberg ’03 PT.

Next month Eric Goetz BGD ’93 and his Xtreme 4 team of cyclists will attempt to bike from coast to coast in six days as they compete in the intense Race Across America. You can help them raise awareness about alternative modes of transportation by making a pledge to go carbon neutral the week of June 11.

Seth MacFarlane ’95 FAV, whose animated sit-coms Family Guy and American Dad continue to boost Fox’s ratings, has struck a new deal with the company that may be worth $100 million, according to the latest tidbits from Hollywood. “I get a lot of pleasure out of making shows,” MacFarlane told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s a bonus to be getting paid well for it, and it’s a double bonus to be getting paid exorbitantly for it.”

Rich, Brilliant, Willing designers Theo Richardson ’06 FD, Charles Brill ’06 FD and Alexander Williams ’06 FD won third place in a recent Greener Gadgets competition for their hypothetical Green Cell one-size-fits-all rechargeable battery.

If you’re headed to Haystack this summer, it may feel something like a RISD reunion in Maine. RISD professors Liz Collins ’91 TX/MFA ’99 and Rosanne Somerson ’76 ID will be teaching workshops, as will alumni Katherine Gray MFA ’91 GL, Eric Hopkins ’76 SC and Jack Wax MFA ’83 GL. Arnie Yasinski, RISD’s executive vice president for administration + finance, is beginning a three-year term on the Haystack Board of Trustees, where he will serve as treasurer and join RISD Professor Paul Sproll and alumna Eck Follen MFA ’90 FD on the Haystack Board of Trustees.

Doxology, an experimental comedy by Michael Langan ’07 FAV, is a finalist in the “alternative” category of the 2008 Student Academy Awards. Gold, silver and bronze medals, along with cash prizes, will be presented in each category at the awards ceremony on June 7.

Although color is a wonderful thing, not everyone is comfortable making decisions about it. To help, Meg Roberts ’78 TX and her husband Steve of The Echo Design Group recently published Color at Home, a — you guessed it — colorful guide to making tasteful choices in your own environment. This is the third book Meg and Steve Roberts have completed for Echo, where she is the creative director of the Home division.

“My wife liked to go to meetings and was always on time,” says Bob Gregan ’60 LA, speaking about his longtime partner Janet (Shaw) Gregan ’58 AE. Prior to her death last October, she had served for many years as town historian in North Branford, CT. Now, the town’s Totoket Historical Society is accepting contributions to install a decorative clock on the Town Hall in Janet’s memory.
