masterful work
05.18.07 | issue #28
The Annual Graduate Thesis Exhibition opened last evening at a much larger venue than in the past — the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence. With 10,000-sf of space, the new site enables each graduate student to show a body of work as opposed to a single piece. Conceptually compelling and technically masterful, the work ranges from lush paintings and stunning textiles to video performance pieces, jewelry made from human hair, 3D photographic installations and large ceramic mobiles, among other intriguing pieces. The show continues daily from 12-5pm through June 2, but if you can’t make it to Providence, check it out virtually via this web gallery of video and still imagery, along with artists’ statements.

look around
Artist Kara Walker MFA ’94 PT/PR, a 1997 MacArthur Fellow, has made the newly released TIME 100, the magazine’s annual list of 100 people in all walks of life who are “transforming the world.” Fellow artist Barbara Kruger noted that “few have managed to capture the collision between past and present, between histories and horror stories, between sexuality and shame, between skin and meat, as powerfully and provocatively as Kara Walker, 37.”

Good news for Office dA, the Boston-based architecture and design firm founded by principal partners Monica Ponce de León and Nader Tehrani B.ARCH ’86. The firm has won the Cooper-Hewitt’s 2007 National Design Award for Architecture Design for its many innovative projects, including the Fleet Library at RISD. Four other RISD alumni won National Design Awards in 2006: architect Michael Gabellini B.ARCH ’81 and graphic designers Michael Rock MFA ’84 GD, Susan Sellars ’89 GD and Georgianna Stout ’89 GD of the New York studio 2x4.

If you’re at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York this weekend or early next week, check out Crystal Connections, a booth showcasing 20 prototypes made by RISD students in Furniture Design. The students worked with CRYSTALLIZED™ – Swarovski Elements (a division of Swarovski, the world’s leading manufacturer of cut crystal) to dream up new uses for crystal in furniture and home accessories. from the alumni association
At Commencement on June 2, the Alumni Association is presenting Nat Hesse ’76 SC with its Award for Leadership. As founder of the RISD New Mexico alumni club and an active member of the Alumni Council, he has been “a tireless advocate for RISD,” notes Steve Whitten, director of Alumni + Career Services.

We’re gearing up for the next round of regional alumni exhibitions and biennials. Calls for entry have been sent in St. Louis and the Washington, DC/Baltimore metro area. Contact regional club leaders Patty Boman in St. Louis and either Stephanie Yoffee (DC) or Jamie Kutner (Baltimore) for more information and to indicate your interest in participating.

Exposure helps when you’re trying to market your work, and the web offers one of the cheapest and easiest mediums to try. If you’re confused about where to start, check out ACSO’s listings of art and design-related sites open for posting work online (either for free or a fee). With online exposure, you’re able to reach out worldwide.

Each year RISD sponsors three alumni art sales in the Providence area, but the exhibitors come from all over the US (and the world) to participate in these popular events. Next month we’ll begin sending out applications for the October sale at RISD by Design weekend and the December holiday sale at the Rhode Island Convention Center. If you’re interested in receiving an application, be sure to contact Alan Tracy, Alumni Sale Coordinator.

on campus
senior film festival

“This year’s show looks like one of the best in recent years,” promises Michael Janusonis, film critic for The Providence Journal, after previewing the 39 films created by graduating seniors. The animated, live action and documentary films make their public debuts from 7-11pm tonight, Friday, May 18 and tomorrow, May 19 in the RISD Auditorium.

runway appeal

If you live within driving distance of RISD, it’s not too late to catch Collection 2007, this year’s runway show of the best works produced in Apparel Design. It premieres this Saturday at 7pm at Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium in Providence, with a 2pm preview performance. Students will sell selections from their wonderful handmade clothing on Sunday, May 20 at noon in the RISD Auditorium lobby.

topping off

Earlier this week, construction workers and other key players in the project held a topping-off ceremony as the final steel beam was put in place for The Happy and Malcolm Chace Center designed by Rafael Moneo. The new building will open in September 2008; click here for a gallery of images of construction in progress.
