refreshing work in nyc
05.19.06 | issue #18
From acrylic on panel to video, blown glass and an undulating wall sculpture made of tiny paper cocktail umbrellas, the RISD Biennial NYC 2006 promises to make a splash when it opens on June 15 at Exit Art in Manhattan. The show features 73 pieces by alumni living and/or working in the NYC area and will have a short but sweet run of two days (June 16 and 17, from 10-6). Selected by Robert Storr, a former senior curator at MoMA and curator of the 2007 Venice Biennale, the biennial will offer a glimpse of the range of work produced by alumni of all generations who have gravitated to this especially art-conscious metropolis.

from the alumni association
Do you work for a nonprofit? Are you involved in the public sector? We’d like to know more about how your time at RISD influenced your choice of work. Tell us more by responding to our really short survey.

All RISD alumni can apply to participate in the RISD alumni art sales. Just contact Alan Tracy in the Alumni + Career Services Office to find out more and get on the application mailing list. Sales are held in Rhode Island in May, October and December and in San Francisco in December.

In Providence, spring brought more than April showers and even more May showers; it marked the annual migration of more than 125 employers to campus for Reality Check Portfolio Reviews. Nearly half the reviewers were alumni, many of whom were looking for students for entry-level and internship positions. Check out photos of some of the alumni and students who attended this year’s reviews and learn how you, too, can find talented students.

look around
The Boston Globe calls it “brilliantly mundane,” while Business Week heralded it as “an instant classic.” The applause is for It’s JerryTime!, an animated blog by Orrin Zucker ’83 GD, written and scored by his brother Jerry, chronicling the life and times of a 40-year-old single guy whose life is just a little bit harder than it should be. Yahoo! Picks even suggested that “one reason box office sales stink is the Web keeps siphoning off original talent” like Zucker’s.

Among the many RISD alumni currently showing around the country and the world, several have works at major venues in NYC. Recently declassified government documents are the focus of a two-gallery show in Chelsea of paintings and light projections by Jenny Holzer MFA ’77 PT (at Lambert and Cheim & Read through June 17). The Metropolitan is featuring an equally topical show by Kara Walker MFA ’94 PT/PR called After the Deluge, a post-Katrina visual and verbal meditation on the pervasive racial undercurrents in America and the realities of death by water (through July 30). And at MoMA, Shahzia Sikander MFA ’95 PT/PR is among 17 artists from Islamic backgrounds featured in Without Boundary (through May 22).

With Design Week in New York this long weekend, plenty of alumni and students are in the city showing at the ICFF (International Contemporary Furniture Fair) and related venues. RISD teamed up with Martha Stewart for input/output, a show of experimental furniture representing the departments of Furniture Design, Digital + Media and Textiles. In Brooklyn HauteGREEN 2006 includes sustainable products by Paul Loebach ’02 ID and Daniel Michalik MFA ’04 FD, and Alissia Melka-Teichroew MID ’04 is showing at A&G Merch and at Spring gallery, where work by Lindsey Adelman ’96 ID and Melissa Borrell MFA ’05 JM is also on view. If you’re in the city this weekend, just look around; chances are you’ll find even more signs of RISD.

talk about illustration

Children’s book author/illustrator Grace Lin ’99 IL is the next RISD graduate who will speak at The RISD Museum as one of six visiting illustrators invited to talk about their work in conjunction with the exhibition From Goodnight Moon to Art Dog: The World of Clement, Edith and Thacher Hurd. She’ll visit this Sunday at 2:30pm, followed by Anna Alter ’97 IL on June 4, Christopher Denise ’90 IL on June 11 and Allison Cole ’03 PR on June 18.

fresh from the studio

May is the month when it all comes together at RISD as students finish up the year in a flurry of final projects. Among the plethora of work on public view this week is the Annual Graduate Student Exhibition at The RISD Museum, the Senior Film/Animation/Video Festival at the RISD Auditiorium and Collection 2006, the annual Apparel Design show, at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence on Saturday.
