wet and wonderful
06.16.06 | issue #19
If there’s one thing the Class of 2006 will remember about graduation, it’s that everyone got very wet. The showers held off for the Chace Center groundbreaking celebration the day before, but it was too wet Friday morning for the Commencement rehearsal to be held on site (outdoors). And on Saturday, just before the graduates streamed in to take their seats, the skies opened up in a sudden downpour. However, even the drizzle that continued on and off throughout the ceremony couldn’t dampen the spirits of the 483 undergraduate and 166 graduate students who have now moved on to the next exciting chapters in their lives. Click here for a look at Commencement and audio excerpts from the keynote address delivered by internationally known installation artist Kara Walker MFA ’94 PT/PR.

from the alumni association
The RISD Biennial NYC 2006 opened last night at Exit Art, 475 Tenth Avenue in Manhattan, which means you have today and tomorrow to check it out. The gallery is open from 10am-6pm both days, and several of the exhibiting artists will speak about their work tomorrow at 2pm.

At the Alumni Association’s annual meeting June 2-3, Amy Calkins ’81 PH was elected president for a two-year term. Click here for the full roster of officers as well as new and returning Alumni Council members. Interested in getting more involved in the Association? Contact Steve Whitten.

Forget the s’mores. Summer camp for artists generally takes the form of a residency program — a weekend, a week or even a month at a retreat or artists’ colony. To find a spot suited to your needs and interests, check the Alliance of Artist Communities.

RISD alumni will receive two of the 10 National Design Awards presented by the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in October. The 2006 award for interior design will go to Michael Gabellini BAR ’81, a principal at Gabellini Sheppard Associates, LLP, while the award for communications design goes to a finalist in the 2005 competition: 2x4, a studio in NYC run by Michael Rock MFA ’84 GD, Susan Sellars ’89 GD and Georgianna Stout ’89 GD. RISD President Roger Mandle served on the seven-person jury responsible for selecting the winners, who will receive their awards at the Cooper-Hewitt on October 18 as part of a new educational initiative known as National Design Week.

A year after author/illustrator Jarrett Krosoczka ’99 IL published Punk Farm, his fifth wildly popular children’s book, he has signed with DreamWorks to make a movie of it. “Jarrett’s style and attitude are fun and fresh,” noted DreamWorks producer Kevin Messick, who discovered the book when he was reading it to his own preschool child. targeting risd

Cool Hunting, a website highlighting interesting finds at the intersection of design, culture and technology, recently found risd|works, pointing out that the store sells artwork and designs by both “big names” and “more off-the-radar (but similarly talented) designers.”

music for kids (and others)

Join Mauro Hantman ’91 PR, an actor at Trinity Repertory Company, as he retells the classic Peter and the Wolf tale, accompanied by the quintet Classical Winds of Rhode Island on Sunday, June 25 at The RISD Museum.

celebrating st. florian

A retrospective of the work of Architecture Professor Emeritus Friedrich St. Florian continues through July 2 at Brown University’s David Winton Bell Gallery. The RISD Museum is also hosting a simultaneous, complementary exhibition focused on his work as a teacher and his projects in Rhode Island. In May Brown University awarded St. Florian an honorary doctorate for his lifetime achievements.
