 | 07.30.09 | issue #53 | | | meaningful gestures | | | If the experimental work going on in RISD's g-speak studio feels a lot like sci-fi, it's probably because students are working with a groundbreaking technology that's not yet on the market. Through this spring '09 studio and a follow-up class this fall, they're imagining potential uses for g-speak, a spatial operating environment (SOE) that enables people to use computers by moving their hands and arms in the air - through gestures - instead of using a keyboard, touch-screen or mouse. You can see how students have begun experimenting with the SOE in this video and learn more about the technology from the company developing it: Oblong Industries. | | | video | etsy discovers nature lab | | |

| | | from alumni relations | | | We hope you've looked at the RISD by Design '09 brochure we sent you earlier this month, and just want to remind you that the October 9-10 event is not only for alumni celebrating significant reunion years - it's for all of you. We've got some wonderful new programming planned for this year, so check out our RISD by Design blog for ongoing updates or just cut straight to the chase and register online.
You can do both, as President John Maeda likes to say - in this case, play golf and support RISD's scholarship fund at the 12th Annual RISD OPEN Golfing for Scholarships tournament on Friday, August 7 at New England Country Club in Bellingham, MA.
| | | fund raising | | | Despite a down economy, the RISD Annual Fund raised $930,230 during fiscal year 2008-09, which ended on June 30. More than 3,100 alumni, parents and friends made contributions to the Annual Fund, which provides scholarships and other financial support to RISD students and faculty.
Kudos to the Class of '09 for reigniting the RISD tradition of giving a senior class gift. Led by Sara Kudra BArch '09, the class got more than 10 percent of students to contribute a total of $2,512, which they used to buy 10 industrial bins in support of 2nd Life, a materials exchange program on campus.
| | | on campus | | | If you've already found RISD on Flickr, YouTube and Vimeo, don't stop there. Become a fan of RISD on Facebook, get RISD updates via Twitter or subscribe to the RSS feed from our.risd.edu, where you'll discover interesting tidbits about alumni and other members of the RISD community and enjoy posts from President John Maeda (whom you'll also find on Twitter, FB, iTunes and via the 315,000+ Google links his name generates).
The 519 high school students who are currently immersed in RISD's intense Pre-College Program will be showing selected fruits of their labor at Woods-Gerry Gallery. Join them on Wednesday, August 5 from 6-8pm for their exhibition opening or drop by before the end of the day on Friday, August 7 to get a glimpse of the great work produced this summer.
Registration began this week for fall Continuing Education classes, which include an entirely new series of courses on floral artistry. Find out more about the options at CE's Open House this Friday (July 31) from 5:30-7pm at 20 Washington Place in Providence.
A summertime reminder: both the Fleet Library at RISD and the RISD Museum of Art will observe the civilized, Old-World tradition of closing to the public for the month of August.
e-views will also take a hiatus in August, but we'll return to our regular mid-month schedule in September, with the next issue arriving in your inbox in mid September. | |
