risd’s macarthur phenomenon
09.19.06 | issue #20
An unprecedented four of the 25 recipients of the 2006 John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation “genius” grants are RISD alumni, who account for four of the five fellowships granted this year in the visual arts. Ranging in age and career stage from their early 30s to late 50s, the winners are: author/illustrator and RISD honorary trustee David Macaulay ’69 AR; glass artist/sculptor Josiah McElheny ’89 GL; conceptual/installation artist Anna Schuleit ’98 PT; and painter Shahzia Sikander MFA ’95 PT/PR. In the past 10 years, a total of eight alumni have been awarded this distinction from the MacArthur Foundation, which supports achievement in the sciences, the humanities, public affairs, the social sciences and the arts. This year’s recognition of the most alumni ever confirms that RISD’s emphasis on conceptual thinking, creative experimentation, innovation and social responsibility is indeed helping to shape extraordinary leaders in their fields. The recurring phenomenon of RISD grads winning these “genius” grants — and this year accounting for a sixth of the recipients across all fields — is just one measure of success at preparing talented individuals to push their creative potential and focus it on the common good. Other alumni who have earned MacArthur fellowships in recent years are: Julie Mehretu MFA ’97 PT in 2005, Jamie Carpenter ’72 IL in 2004, Janine Antoni MFA ’89 SC in 1998 and Kara Walker ’94 PT/PR in 1997.

risd by design
Jenny Holzer MFA ’77 PT is commemorating the dedication of the new Fleet Library at RISD with For RISD, a site-specific light projection that will be shown after dusk on October 7, 8, 9 and 10. Librarian of Congress James Billington will also celebrate the new library with a short keynote address at the dedication ceremony/Future by Design finale celebration on Saturday, October 7. On October 11, Holzer will culminate her visit to RISD by delivering the annual Gail Silver Memorial Lecture at 6:15pm in the RISD Auditorium.

With the Painting Department in the spotlight at this year’s RISD by Design weekend (October 6-8), Benjamin Edwards MFA ’97 PT/PR, best known for his complex contemporary urban landscapes, will speak about the trajectory of his work and career on Sunday, October 8 at 1pm in the RISD Auditorium. On November 9 he will appear at another RISD do: the Athena Awards presentation in New York City, where he is among the finalists for the RISD/Target Emerging Artist Award.

Choose from the work of 160 artists and designers at RISD’s 18th annual Alumni + Student Art Sale on Saturday, October 7, from 10am to 4pm. The sale on Benefit Street is a perennial favorite at RISD by Design weekend and is tented to keep you dry should rain dare fall that day. For more information, contact Alan Tracy.

towards more diversity

Can you point us to a great high school with diverse students? Approximately 25% of RISD’s new freshmen are students of color and another 18% are citizens of other countries, but the Admissions Office would like to make more progress in building the most diverse group of new students possible. Please help us reach these students by sharing the name of a high school in your area with an excellent program in the visual arts or architecture. Contact Antonio Peters, RISD’s Multicultural Recruitment Specialist.

small wars discussion

In conjunction with the exhibition of Small Wars at The RISD Museum, photographer An-My Lê, a Vietnamese refugee who returned years after the war to try to make sense of it, will visit RISD as part of the T.C. Colley Lecture Series. Her 7pm presentation on Tuesday, September 26 will focus on both Small Wars and her most recent series, 29 Palms, which captures marines bound for Iraq and Afghanistan. It will be followed by a panel discussion with faculty members Julia Bryan-Wilson from RISD and Rebecca Schneider from Brown.
