RISD and Brown University have teamed up to offer a new dual degree program, with the first students invited to apply for admission for fall 2008. Applicants who are admitted to both institutions will enroll in a five-year program to simultaneously earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from RISD and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brown. The new program builds on the longstanding agreement between RISD and Brown to allow students to cross-register for courses, and taps into the specialized focus and resources of each institution. This allows our institutions to develop a consilient approach, says President Mandle, merging the strengths and educationa
l rigor of each institution to form a true model of interdisciplinary education. Click here to read a press release about the new program. |

In addition to catching up with old friends and favorite faculty at RISD by Design (October 5-7), the weekend offers a great opportunity to tap into a bevy of fun and interesting events happening on campus. David Wilson, founding director of the Museum of Jurassic Technology, promises to give a fascinating talk on Friday evening, while on Saturday textiles designer Mark Pollack 76 TX will discuss his latest collection inspired by works in The RISD Museum and on Sunday Professor Henry Horenstein 71 PH/MFA 73 will give a slide lecture about Honky Tonk, a current RISD Museum exhibition of photography focused on the country music scene.
If youd like to share news about your exhibitions, projects, awards or any other accomplishments, please e-mail the information to us at risdviews@risd.edu. We have several ways of disseminating your news to fellow alumni, including via this monthly electronic newsletter (www.risd.edu/eviews.cfm), through our online listing of alumni exhibitions (www.risd.edu/exhibitions.cfm) and in the class notes section of the print magazine, risd views, which is now published twice a year (in mid-fall and mid-spring). |

After conducting a national search, RISD has appointed David Bogen as associate provost for Academic Affairs. With a PhD in sociology, he comes to RISD after 15 years at Emerson College, where he helped establish the Institute for Liberal Arts and Interdisciplinary Studies.
This month RISDs own Woods-Gerry Gallery is showcasing work produced in Art as a Source of Healing, a RISD class in which students work directly with children at Bradley Hospital in Providence. This is definitely not an art-therapy course, notes faculty member Melinda Bridgman, in a recent Providence Journal article about the show. Its an opportunity to learn about and experience the interrelationship between art and healing.
Widely known for his mixed-media and wearable sculptures, Chicago-based artist Nick Cave will deliver the museums Gail Silver Memorial Lecture on Wednesday, October 10 at 6:15pm in the RISD Auditorium. His talk is free and open to everyone.
Over the summer several current students and recent graduates worked with Industrial Design critic Michael Lye 96 ID on a research project for NASA, the latest in an ongoing series of collaborative projects with the national space agency. In anticipation of the next manned mission to the moon, the RISD team developed an interface between spacesuits and an airlock door to help prevent astronauts from carrying potentially harmful moon dust into the lunar lander. |

As one of two self-professed fools traveling in tuxedos, Doug Campbell 02 ID is currently on the road between Hong Kong and London raising money for The Silly Fund. The quirky interactive journey known as Tuxedo Travels is generating a fair amount of interest online.
Printmaker Yizhak Elyashiv MFA 92 JM, who teaches in RISDs Foundation Studies Division, is one of three outstanding visual artists to win a $25,000 MacColl Johnson Fellowship from The Rhode Island Foundation. The awards jury noted the richness, complexity and beauty of Elyashivs work and identified him as a seasoned professional. Three of the four people named as finalists also have RISD affiliations: photographer and Professor Joe Deal, painter Ruth Dealy 71 PT/MFA 73 and photographer/professor Jeffery Silverthorne 69 PH. |
