faculty show their own
09.20.05 | issue #10
Although their focus is on the next generation of contemporary artists, the almost 500 full- and part-time faculty members who teach here are also extraordinary artists and designers in their own right. Their work comes together in one venue every other year when The RISD Museum hosts the Faculty Biennial — a show of enormous range that’s also something of a barometer of contemporary taste. The Biennial opens to the campus community and other Museum members on September 29, and continues through October 30. Be sure to catch it if you’re on campus for RISD by Design weekend (October 7-9).

look around
A RISD graduate is once again among the 25 artists, scientists, writers and scholars reeling from today’s news that they’ve won $500,000 no-strings-attached awards from the MacArthur Foundation. Painter Julie Mehretu MFA ’97 PT/PR (see also, risd views, Fall 2004) was selected for a coveted 2005 MacArthur “genius grant” for her “dazzling, layered pictorial planes of geometric abstractions, iconic imagery, and figurative markings.”

After over two years of focused effort by more than 100 people in the RISD community, a compact solar-powered home designed and built by RISD students will be open to the public from October 7 through 16 on the National Mall in Washington, DC. The full-scale prototype is one of 18 houses created by teams of college students competing in the US Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon 2005.

His name may not be on the marquee, but when Corpse Bride opens this week you’re likely to hear more about Mike Johnson ’90 FAV, who co-directed the fabulous new animated film with Tim Burton. Featuring the voices of Johnny Depp, Danny Elfman (who also composed the score) and Albert Finney, among scads of others, it promises to be “warped and wonderfully effervescent,” according to Rolling Stone.

You just had to be there. But assuming you weren’t, you can still check out the latest collection by Laura Poretzky ’99 AP, one of 10 up-and-coming fashion designers selected to show at last week’s UPS Delivers Fashion’s Future. The event was part of the renowned Olympus Fashion Week in New York’s Bryant Park. Given the timing, Poretzky’s label, Abaeté, will donate a portion of proceeds from the sale of one of its jumpers to victims of Hurricane Katrina.

on campus
15 west now open

RISD welcomed 500 more on-campus residents earlier this month when it opened 15 West, the new student housing facility at 15 Westminster Street (read more about it in the fall issue of risd views, which is on its way to you this week). Another 411 students — the new members of the Class of 2009 — also moved into The Quad, still home to all Foundation students. Read about some of them here.

lynch on creativity and the brain

On Sunday, October 2, film director David Lynch (Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, Mulholland Drive) will speak at Brown on “Consciousness, Creativity and the Brain.” He’s also using the occasion to launch the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace. Sponsored in part by RISD, Lynch’s talk is free and open to the public, and will be held at 7:30pm at Salomon Hall 101 (on the green).
