There's plenty cooking this month at our alumni clubs across the country, including a RISD/Phoenix get-together next week in Tempe, AZ as part of Phoenix's first-ever Design Week and a reception in Chicago with President John Maeda on November 5 (rsvp here!). The Boston, Los Angeles and Philadelphia groups are also coming together for various events this month. Watch for separate e-mail invitations to activities in your area or log in to the events calendar in the RISD online directory.

If you're career-curious, risd/careers/ on Facebook provides up-to-date info on programs, websites, articles and more to help you forge your own creative path. Become a fan and join the hundreds of alumni who are benefitting from sharing resources.

Tonight Jared Miller, the founder of the African company KEZA, will be at RISD to discuss volunteer and internship opportunities like the one seniors Jenny Lai '10 AP and Lindsay Perkins '10 AP did in Rwanda last summer. The entire RISD community is invited to his 8pm presentation at the Fleet Library at RISD, where he'll show how the production of jewelry and apparel is helping African women to improve their lives.

On Thursday, October 22, artist Arnie Zimmerman will visit RISD to talk about his densely detailed ceramic sculpture Inner City, an installation of more than 180 architectural and figurative ceramic elements on view through January 3 at the RISD Museum. His 2pm talk is free with Museum admission and takes place in the Chace Center's Metcalf Auditorium.

Art critic Jed Perl promises to provide plenty to think about when he presents Authority and Freedom: Reflections on Artistic Experience and Liberal Society on Thursday, October 22 at 7pm in the RISD Auditorium. Sponsored by the Foundation Studies Division, his talk is free and open to the public.

The Nature Lab is teaming up with the Synergetics Collaborative, a nonprofit organization dedicated to furthering the thinking of Buckminster Fuller, to host a symposium on November 14 and 15 called Design Science: Nature's Problem-Solving Method (be sure to register in advance). The weekend event in the Chace Center's Metcalf Auditorium will be preceded by a related art exhibition in the Nature Lab and adjacent Waterman Gallery.
