 | 11.21.08 | issue #45 | | | shared openings | | | Judging by the steady stream of people coming and going from the Chace Center every day, RISD's new multi-use building is clearly becoming the hub it was designed to be, bringing together students, faculty, staff and increasing numbers of public visitors. A couple of weeks ago, the place was abuzz again after hours for a double opening: in the Gelman Student Exhibition Gallery on the second floor and in the ground-floor foyer. While viewers took in From Big Box to White Box, the second student-curated show in what is now the largest student gallery on campus, they also stopped on the floor below to toast the artwork created by four faculty members for a new RISD Select Series of t-shirts. Curated by Kelly Goff MFA '09 SC, the student show on view through December 14 looks at various ways big box stores influence artists - from providing material inspiration to eliciting wry social commentary. The shirt designs by professors Nancy Skolos, Soojung Ham '92 ID, Trent Burleson MFA '76 PT and Randy Willier are part of the new series President John Maeda curated for Threadless and are available online at theselectseries.com and in-store at risd|works. Their creative teamwork is expected to bring in $15,000 for RISD's scholarship fund. | | | students stand out at artists' ball | | |
Some things never change at RISD, especially the irrepressible urge among students to "dress up," as they did spectacularly for this year's Artists' Ball (November 7).
