risd reps look good at moma

December 17, 2004 | issue #3

When New York’s Museum of Modern Art reopened last month, the crowds privy to special previews and festivities discovered an energetic painting by Julie Mehretu MFA ’97 PT/PR consuming the better part of one wall in the contemporary galleries. An organic Epidermis scarf by Yuh Okano ’91 TX is on view in the textiles area and work by Shahzia Sikander MFA ’95 PT/PR hangs in the “gorgeous new print gallery,” as RISD Associate Professor of Painting Holly Hughes described it. Sikander is in line to be the next artist to collaborate with teenagers on MoMA’s new Red Studio web project, and many other RISD alumni (including Janine Antoni MFA ’89 SC, Jenny Holzer MFA ’77 PT and Kara Walker MFA ’94 PT/PR) have a presence at MoMA, too, either in the permanent collection or through various special exhibitions and programs. New Yorker Melissa Gould ’79 PH even made The New York Times Sunday Style section for showing up at the MoMA reopening wearing her black “priest’s biretta” hat.

In January Career Services’ online job listings and library will become password-protected to limit use to members of the RISD community. The service will still be free to all alumni — click here to register and select a user name and password.

A Midwest Club serving portions of six states is joining our regional network, with events planned in different host cities. Join us on January 15 for the big kickoff at the Columbus [OH] Museum of Art.

Two upcoming alumni exhibitions have posted calls for entries. One is at the Selah Art Gallery in LA on March 19, while the other has a month-long run in April at Trudy Labell Fine Art in Naples, FL.

look around
Seen The Incredibles yet? Angus MacLane ’97 FAV and Dave Mullins ’93 IL, two alumni now at Pixar, played a part in bringing the new computer-animated film to the screen, working on the memorable Elastigirl scenes and on Mr. Incredible’s confrontation with a robot destroyer.

If you find yourself at the Providence Performing Arts Center over the holidays, look up. The new 3,500-lb. glass, steel and acrylic chandelier in the gilded, domed ceiling of the 1928 theater was designed by New Hampshire-based glass artist Dan Dailey MFA ’72 CR.

“You make it more raw and unwieldy and aggressive and everyone totally goes for it,” says Brian Chippendale ’97, a partner with Brian Gibson ’98 IL in the band Lightning Bolt. An article on the two in Spin calls Providence “the cradle of neo-noise.”

“Good design is at the heart of all rebranding,” noted Anaezi Modu, founder and director of the new ReBrand 100 competition, in The Providence Journal. “It drives the functionality of the product and the clarity of the message, not just how it looks.” Judged by 10 professionals from around the world, Rebrand 100 is co-sponsored by the RISD/Bryant Center for Design & Business. Judging took place in Providence earlier this month, with winners to be announced in February.

accessible resort
This semester 15 students in Industrial Design and Interior Architecture worked to design a more accessible eco-resort on St. John in the US Virgin Islands. After a month of research here on campus, they visited the Caribbean site to assess the usability of everything from outdoor pathways to interior lighting and showers. Students in a graduate studio recently teamed up with Rhode Island’s Sakonnet Vineyards to celebrate the arts of winemaking and graphic design. See the results on a bottle of 2002 Rhode Island Red or click here for more about the Sakonnet project.

Just in time for the holidays, you can now order clothing and giftware from The RISD Store online. The site features a selection of new and classic designs, with more items to be introduced throughout the winter. Order by Tuesday, December 21 for delivery by Christmas.

happy holidays

With final crits this week, most students are heading homeward (or in any case, outward) this weekend. If you want to reach faculty and staff this month, be patient: most RISD offices are closed from Thursday, December 23 through Sunday, January 2.
