’tis the season

The RISD alumni holiday sales have come and gone on both coasts, but if you’re in the Rhode Island area you can still find plenty of alumni and faculty fine art and design products at risd|works in downtown Providence. An exhibition of small works priced under $500 continues through December 24, and a new show of paintings by Paula Martiesian ’76 PT is on view from January 5 through February 4. You can check out the store’s new curated collection of featured products online, but remember, that’s just a fraction of the work available at the actual location. The risd:store, risd!kids and the Museum Shop also offer items of interest for the holidays — and year-round, for that matter.

Mastering the essentials of business isn’t easy, especially if you’re more comfortable in a studio than a boardroom. But the Wintersession Art of Business series at RISD can help. It offers valuable information about starting and operating creative enterprises, and is free to all alumni and students.

look around
Photographer Judy Gelles MFA ’91 PH may have found a new calling with her first film, From Philadelphia to the Front. The documentary on Jewish American veterans of WWII explores the experience of fighting anti-Semitism at home and abroad, and has already won awards at three international film festivals, with four more festivals on the docket this winter.

Never a minimalist at heart, Patrick Hamilton ’86 GD came up with comfortable alternatives when moving into a petite New York apartment. His solutions have inspired cable audiences this month on HGTV’s series Small Space, Big Style. You can catch a replay of the episode on January 1 at 3pm ET/PT and find still photos of his home on the HGTV website.

To mark the DVD release of Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, Shepard Fairey ’92 IL designed one of his inimitable print portraits — in this case, of Darth Vader. His 14 x 11" Vader poster was first offered as a perk for Best Buy aficionados and is now being pushed by the Empire at the Star Wars Shop.

rockefeller gives to risd

Following in the footsteps of his mother and his aunt, both of whom were major donors to The RISD Museum’s Asian collection in the first half of the 20th century, David Rockefeller has pledged $1 million for the restoration, reinstallation and reinterpretation of the Museum’s Asian galleries when they open on the sixth floor of the planned Chace Center. “Mr. Rockefeller’s generosity will honor [his family’s] legacy...and allow us to show our fine Asian collections in appropriate and beautiful new galleries,” noted Museum Director Hope Alswang in the press release announcing the gift.

art market

A trio of entrepreneurial Brown students has launched an online site selling student artwork (mostly by their RISD brethren) to fellow students. Called College Canvas, the new enterprise was born when two of the students hung a painting by a friend from RISD in their dorm and suddenly got offers from fellow students to buy the piece right off the wall. Now they “want everyone at Brown to have pieces from RISD or Brown artists up in their dorm rooms,” one of the founders told the Brown Daily Herald.

As a complement to risd views, the college magazine, e-views is produced by RISD’s Design Marketing Collaborative and e-mailed to readers monthly during the academic year (September-June). Questions? Comments? Send a message to risdviews@risd.edu.
