| | | from alumni relations | | | | To encourage the best-qualified students to apply for admissions, RISD has been developing online tools, including new undergraduate and graduate viewbooks. But since we know alumni are the best advocates for a RISD education, it would be great if you could help spread the word, too. The Admissions Office also welcomes your help with Portfolio Days in your area and with making phone calls to accepted students in the spring. Contact Director of Admissions Ed Newhall BArch '74 if you want to get involved.
Elizabeth Bowne Messina '88 GD is inviting RISD alumni to beta test artbox.com, the site she's developing (with support from the National Science Foundation's Small Business Innovation program) to enable independent creatives to showcase their work, network and collaborate with other multidisciplinary professionals. Artbox beta testers will create an online profile and portfolio, and participate in forum discussions and intra-site networking ? including a private forum just for the RISD community. If you're interested in helping Beth, send her an e-mail at beth@artbox.com and type "Beta-RISD" into the subject field. She'll respond with your password information.
Paintings, photographs, watercolors and more share gallery space with works incorporating fava beans, rubber, plastic, motor oil, aluminum and farm implements when the RISD New England Alumni Biennial 2009 opens next month at Arsenal Center for the Arts in Watertown, MA. Featuring selected work by 55 alumni artists, the show opens from 2-5 on Saturday, January 10 and continues through February 22.
| | | on campus | | | | To encourage more students to ride bikes around campus, Industrial Design majors Nate Phipps '10 ID and Madeleine McGarrity '10 ID have launched a borrow-a-bike service called Pink Rides. Read more on the initiative in The Brown Daily Herald.
The Department of Prints, Drawings and Photographs at the RISD Museum has received $1 million from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support increased use of the collection by students and faculty at RISD and Brown. Click here to download a press release on the recent grant.
In this season of giving, please consider making a tax-deductible gift to RISD to support current students. Additional financial support from alumni may provide the resources to allow some students to continue next semester when their families' financial situations have changed. It's quick and easy to contribute online to the RISD Annual Fund.
