As an FAV major, you will learn to work in
live action, animation or a hybrid of the two, and will have
the option of producing films in a wide variety of genres
(such as documentary, experimental, narrative) and for diverse
outlets (including installations and interactive media).
FAV students regularly analyze and solve technical and aesthetic
problems, and benefit from exposure to critical review, film
festivals and visiting artists and specialists. Although
the path you choose will be your own, the goal of the program
is to hone your creative vision and teach you the skills
to produce artistically strong work.
RISD’s FAV facilities offer production studios for
film, video, 16mm, 35mm and puppet animation; digital editing
and sound mixing rooms; and CGI and Macintosh workstations
with a full range of professional production and editing
software. But “what distinguishes us from a lot of
schools,” says Dean of Fine Arts John Terry, “is
that we’re not just teaching how to use the tools,
we’re using the tools to teach our students about concepts,
critical thinking, content.” While students are easily “seduced
by the bells and whistles” of the latest technology,
their professors recognize that the industry is hungry for
artists with the conceptual and aesthetic vision to reach
beyond simply manipulating high-tech gadgetry. |
