Furniture design is an exciting field of study that integrates design, craft and fine arts. Students will embark on a course of study that encompasses skills, theory and context. Drawing from a rich tradition, furniture design bridges disciplines and historic movements. Its character continues to change and grow along with shifts in culture. Through research and practice, students will explore the wide spectrum of concept, physical need and aesthetic perspective that constitutes furniture design study.
In the sophomore year the emphasis is on achieving a high level of technical competency with a range of materials and their application, as well as processes for evolving concepts through designing models and built pieces. Students will explore principles of design as they relate to issues of function and culture. In the junior year students will be encouraged to experiment and research new materials, types of furniture objects, and issues relating to the role of furniture in particular contexts or settings. Collaboration with other disciplines is built into the curriculum. In the senior year, students work toward achieving a body of work that demonstrates a high level of understanding of the principles of furniture design while simultaneously expressing the design theory and aesthetic strengths of the individual. In addition, seniors focus on professional practices and presentation skills.
Recently, technology has reconformed the designers process, and new materials and acceptance for their integration into furniture have widened the artists palette. As our field evolves, education using new technologies is becoming an increasingly important component of a furniture design education. Our existing curriculum stresses the learning of material and tool technologies as part of the structure of furniture design study. The integration of computer technology with our other tool technologies is a new and important curricular development. As digital technology becomes more seamlessly integrated into contemporary times, we are adjusting our curriculum to introduce and integrate the computer as a tool for designing, drawing, writing, and preparing materials for fabrication and presentation. Sophomores entering the Furniture Design Department are obliged to purchase a laptop computer, software, upgrades and insurance specified by the departments policy guidelines. For more information call the department at 401 454-6373.
Student work is evaluated through numerous critiques and reviews from departmental faculty as well as outside critics. In addition, field trips and visiting artists help to expand the realm of exposure to developments within the field.
