RISD's MFA program in Printmaking integrates new approaches to the medium with the great historical traditions, encouraging individual artistic growth through the exploration of printed multiples. Exposure to critical insights from faculty, visiting artists and print-world professionals leads to advanced personal work responsive to the issues defining the field.
Through this two-year program, students learn to master intaglio, lithography, screenprint, relief, and photo and digital methods, with special emphasis on one area. Intensive study of historical and contemporary prints in the RISD Museum of Art and other collections in the region provides students with invaluable contact with original works of art.

- What technical facilities are available for printmaking at RISD?
As a graduate student, you have access to two well-equipped buildings: Benson Hall, a multipurpose facility that includes digital and darkroom equipment as well as large areas for intaqlio, silkscreen and lithography; and Mason Building, which offers a large print studio for producing private press editions. (Please download the pdf below for a complete list of facilities and specialized equipment.)
- Is any financial aid available for Printmaking grad students?
Assistantships are available in which students receive a stipend for assisting the Printmaking faculty with a wide variety of research projects and course preparation.
- Do graduate students teach courses of their own?
Yes, during the second year of study you're invited to teach a course that you conceive of and develop yourself. This usually takes place over RISD's six-week Wintersession.
- Are there any opportunities for internships?
Yes, many of our graduate students intern at major print workshops and with visiting artists during Wintersession and over the summer.
