WHAT ARE THE STUDIOS LIKE?
First-year graduate students share semi-private studios in the Fletcher Building, a facility designed to promote interdisciplinary discourse among students majoring in a variety of fine arts disciplines. Second-year students are given larger private studios in the same building, where they can focus on their thesis work in the final year.

HOW DO I PREPARE MY PORTFOLIO?
Since faculty determine who to admit based upon the work itself, it is critical that your documentation be clear, cogent and professional. We are looking for diverse young artists who represent the many facets of studio sculpture. With that in mind, your portfolio should reflect your sensibility and should not be “padded” for quantity over quality

HOW MANY PEERS WILL I HAVE IN THE PROGRAM?
There are a total of 16 graduate students in our program: 8 first-year MFA candidates and 8 second-year students.

HOW OFTEN DO GRADUATE STUDENTS MEET WITH ADVISORS?
In our department we meet with graduate students every Thursday from 9 am to 3 pm for tutorials and studio visits. Graduate students also routinely meet with visiting artists in their studios for one-on-one or small group discussions.

WHAT IS PROVIDENCE LIKE AND WHAT ARE THE HOUSING OPTIONS?
Providence is a very accessible and arts-oriented city with several colleges, interesting architectural styles and a river running through the center. It also
has a long history of manufacturing, so there are plenty of resources for materials and services for sculptors. Grad students find very adequate and affordable apartments in the neighborhoods around RISD and Brown University. Current students often pass along good deals to incoming graduate students through e-mail contact.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO MEET WITH GRADUATE FACULTY PRIOR TO OR DURING THE APPLICATION PROCESS?
This is not possible. We receive more than 150 applications for 8 openings in the program. It is highly recommended that candidates take advantage of the In Focus visits organized by the Graduate Studies Office.
